State the intended function of the


handling system; whether it is for a
warehouse whose function is storing,
packaging, inspection, and shipping to
customer or for a manufacturing system
where the function is to move items or
partial assemblies from station to station.

Collect the necessary data
about the material, such as its
characteristics and the quantities
involved.

An example would be in transportation and storage of oils it


important to take note of parameters such as Density, Flash
Point, Boiling Point, Vapor Pressure etc. for safe handling so
as not to incur losses and damage to the product ,user and
environment.

Identify the moves, their origin and destination, their path,


and their length.

An example can be of distribution of Petrol/Gas from the producer to Customer .The


origin(Oil Refinery), Destination(Customer e.g. Engen), the path can pipeline/road/rail,
Length would be distance the product moves from producer to consumer

Step 4
Determine the basic handling system to be used and the
degree of mechanization desired. Here, the idea is to
establish whether a conveyor, a truck, or a crane will be
best suited for the situation.
In the designing of MH for a port, Cranes would best for loading and unloading operations as
compared to the use of conveyors considering the sizes of the cargo and also floor space
availability. Conveyors need more floor space as compared to cranes also capacity in
handling heavy loads is limited

STEP 5
Perform an initial screening of suitable equipment
and select a set of candidate equipment among them.
Evaluate the candidate equipment on the basis of
such measures as cost and utilization. Always match
the equipment with the material characteristics.

In transportation of ore to processing plant, conveyors and dump trucks can be


utilized however dump trucks carrying capacity is limited, operational
costs(maintenance costs, Truck operators) are higher than
conveyors(maintenance costs only) , material handling efficiency is lower as
compared to conveyors. Conveyors are more suited because they have higher
carrying capacity and other subsequent operation can be coupled to it this
results in higher productivity and utilization compared to Dump trucks

Select a set of suitable unit loads and match
them with material and equipment characteristics.

In the manufacture of air control speed valves use of Tote pans allows moving
large quantities thus reducing frequency of movement.

Packaging of powdery products such as sugar or washing powder in sachets


allows containerisation in boxes this allows ease stacking ,protection from
damage and greater speed in loading and unloading during movements
