Webinar on Promoting Mental
Health and Psychological First-Aid

Taal Senior High School hosted a webinar
Silang
to promote mental health and psychological
first-aid to students, parents, teachers, guests,
and stakeholders. It was streamed via Zoom and
DepEd Tayo-TSHS Batangas Facebook page. The
said webinar was commenced on Wednesday,
September 15, 2021 at 9 in the morning.
Mr. Erwin C. Alteza, Teacher II, facilitated
the webinar. It started with the singing of the
national anthem and followed by a prayer
which was led by Ms. Shaira A. Cantal, Teacher
II. The webinar proper continued with an
welcome remarks given by Dr. Larry T. Ojales,
Master Teacher II.
Dr. Ojales highlighted the importance of
this webinar particularly to the students as
he heartily welcomed all the participants.
Then the webinar continued with an
inspirational message delivered by Dr.
Babylyn C. Gonzalvo, Principal II. She
emphasized how lucky the participants are
to be given this opportunity to attend this
kind of webinar. She inspired everyone by
mentioning being and keeping healthy
mentally, emotionally and physically for the
sake of their loved ones.
Another inspirational message was
relayed by Mrs. Conie C. Hernandez, Public
Schools District Supervisor. She was grateful
that the school invited her to attend this
webinar. In her message, she pointed out the
importance of love and togetherness of
everybody to conquer the pandemic. She
added that this kind of activity is one of the
ways of the school to show love to its
learners, parents and the community
because they are given awareness on the
importance of mental health and
psychological first-aid in this trying time. She
inspired everyone to face the light to
conquer the darkness and move on.
After listening to an inspiring message to
move forward despite pandemic from Mrs.
Conie, another inspiring message was shared
by Hon. Fulgencio “Pong” Mercado.

He inspired the participants by appreciating
the essence of the webinar since it focuses on
mental health. He added that this topic is
timely considering that mental health issues are
real. Being the mayor, he showed how the local
government unit (LGU) work together to suffice
the need of the community this pandemic.
Further, he was grateful that TSHS was able to
conduct this kind of activity in which the LGU
wished to accomplish.
To move forward, Mr. Alteza called on the
Brigada Eskwela Chairman, Mrs. Wendy M.
Arenas, for the Program Rational. The objective
of the program was to prepare the teachers,
non-teaching personnel, learners, and parents
in monitoring themselves, look after
themselves to enable them to fulfill the
respective duties and responsibilities in the
education continuity. The webinar focused on
the department’s advocacy on looking after
one’s mental health and providing emotional
support in this trying times.
The webinar continued with the
introduction of the first speaker which was led
by Mr. Lester Jerome S. Balani, Teacher II /
DRRM Coordinator.
Dr. Dulce Teresa M. Platon, Nerologist-
Psychiatrist was the first speaker. She discussed
matters about Psychological First-Aid as the
first-line psychosocial support. She shared who
can give PFA and what these first liners can do.
She also discussed the ethical guidelines in
doing the PFA. Further, she shared the action
principles of look, listen and link. Her discussion
was relatable to the participants as she gave
concrete examples and situation.
Another speaker was called on to share her
expertise on mental health for students and
families as well. She was i n t r o d u c e d by
Mrs. Warehn E.
Manalo, Teacher I.
The resource
speaker, Dr. Shara
May T. Espinol, is a
Program Head of
Psychology and
Human Services at
University of
Batangas.
Dr. Espinol discussed the meaning of
mental health, the status of mental health in
the Philippines, the warning signs of poor
mental health to students, the difference of
normal and abnormal and thethings
that people can do to take
care of their mental health.
Her given examples that happens in daily lives
of people whether fear or anxiety helped in
explaining the concepts related to mental
health.
The discussion on PFA and mental health
given by the resource speakers contributed a
lot to how the participants can take good care
of themselves especially amid CoVid-19
pandemic.
When everything seemed fine and no
further clarifications were raised, the
webinar proceeded with the awarding of
certificate to the resource speakers. It was
signed by the BE Chairman, Mrs. Arenas and
the school principal, Dr. Gonzalvo.
To formally end, Mrs. Rosemarie D.
Benamer, Guidance Advocate, was called on
to on for the closing
remarks. She
congratulated
everybody for
attending the
webinar. Her
message mirrored
the success of the
activity.
