Cervical Extension

• Muscles :-
• Splenious Capitis
• Splenious Cervicis
ORIGIN
Lower ligament nuchae, spinous processes and
supraspinous ligaments T1-3
INSERTION
Lateral occiput between superior and inferior nuchal
lines
ACTION
Extends and rotates cervical spine
NERVE
Posterior primary rami of C3, 4
• ORIGIN
Spinous processes and supraspinous ligaments of
T3-6
• INSERTION
Posterior tubercles of transverse processes of C1-3
• ACTION
Extends and rotates cervica spine
• NERVE
Posterior primary rami of C5, 6
• Grade 5,4,3
Position of Patient :-
Prone
Position of Therapist :-
On test side of the patient.
The patient should extend the neck through
available range.
• Grade 5 :-
Normal
If the patient extend the neck against gravity .
And extend neck against maximum resistance it will be
Grade 5.
Position of therapist :
Side stand near head. Support below the neck and give
resistance on head.
Position of Patient :
Prone and will extend the neck as prescribed by PT.
• Grade 4 :-
Good
If patient give slight jerk while extension against
maximum resistance it will be grade 4.
Position of Therapist :-
Side stand near head.
Position of Patient :-
Prone.
• Grade 3:-
Fair
Patient extend the neck without resistance.
• Grade 2:-
Poor
• Grade 1 :-
Trace
Slight contraction but no movement.
• Grade 0 :-
Zero
No palpation and no movement.
