WHAT IS ENERGY?
Energy can either be mechanical or non-mechanical
Mechanical energy is the energy that can be used to “do work”
Mechanical energy is the sum of potential and kinetic energy
So what is potential and kinetic energy????
Potential Energy
Simply put potential energy is stored energy in an object because of its
relative position, electric charge or internal stress
Kinetic energy is the energy an object has due to motion
Types of potential energy
Gravitational Potential energy- energy stored in an object because of where it
is places, it is found in some objects some height of the ground
Elastic potential energy- energy that is stored by the forces within distorted
elastic objects, such as rubber bands and springs
Chemical potential energy- energy stored in the bonds between atoms and
molecules such as plants , food and coal
Non-mechanical Energy
This type of energy lies on the level of atoms is not related to the motion of
objects
Examples include: heat, light, chemical, electrical, sound
You cannot see non mechanical energy
Classification of Energy
Ways to conserve non renewable energy
Law of conservation of energy
