WHAT IS ENERGY?
 Energy can either be mechanical or non-mechanical
 Mechanical energy is the energy that can be used to “do work”
 Mechanical energy is the sum of potential and kinetic energy
 So what is potential and kinetic energy????
Potential Energy
 Simply put potential energy is stored energy in an object because of its
relative position, electric charge or internal stress
 Kinetic energy is the energy an object has due to motion
Types of potential energy
 Gravitational Potential energy- energy stored in an object because of where it
is places, it is found in some objects some height of the ground
 Elastic potential energy- energy that is stored by the forces within distorted
elastic objects, such as rubber bands and springs
 Chemical potential energy- energy stored in the bonds between atoms and
molecules such as plants , food and coal
Non-mechanical Energy
 This type of energy lies on the level of atoms is not related to the motion of
objects
 Examples include: heat, light, chemical, electrical, sound
 You cannot see non mechanical energy
