NATURAL DISASTERS

WHAT ARE NATURAL DISASTERS?
Natural disasters are those which occur on their own due to physical or
climatic factors. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, storms,
cyclones, fires and floods are some examples of natural disasters.

Volcanic Eruptions
• A volcano is a vent or opening in the crust of the earth from which
molten rocks (lava), volcanic gases and toxic smoke are released. The
earliest recorded volcanic eruption was that of Mt. Vesuvius in Italy
which destroyed the cities of Pompei and Herculaneum.

Effects of Volcanic Eruptions
• The land gets covered with thick layers of lava and ash, and it
becomes permanently useless for humans
• Volcanism also effects the environment by producing acid rain and
making ocean water warmer
• On islands, lava can flow into the sea and cause pollution, affecting
marine life.
• The air gets polluted by acidic smoke and ash.

EARTHQUAKES
• Sudden movement within the earth that results in shaking and
trembling of the surface of earth is called an Earthquake. To measure
the intensity of an earthquake, the Richer Scale is used. An
earthquake of more than 8 intensity causes a heavy damage on earth.

Effects of Earthquakes
• Dams may burst during an earthquake also, which causes floods
• An earthquake causes huge loss to property and life. It destroys
buildings, roads, bridges and human life.
• Earthquakes under the sea can cause huge waves and tsunamis.

Landslides
• A landslides is a sudden sliding down of big rocks and mud along
mountain slopes. It mostly happens in mountainous areas. For
example: mountainous areas of California, Oregon, Washington etc..
an earthquake can cause a landslide. Landslides or mudslides occur
mainly due to rainfall and friction. Landslides are also know as
Landslips.

10/1/2022 9
Effects of Landslides
• Landslide causes significant changes in the landscape of the earth’s
surface.
• A landslide can immense damage to human life and property.
• It can cause floods also by blocking rivers.

Tsunamis
• The main reason for tsunami waves to occur is an earthquake. When a
wave comes out from the coast of a sea, it runs into a rift between
those two islands and it combines with the water inside the earth to
create a wave of up to 30 kilometers that no one can stop. The Pacific
Ocean is the centre of tsunami attraction. Tsunamis do not leave
anything in their way.

Effects of Tsunamis
• Many facilities like transport, electric, telephone systems etc. are
destroyed.
• Due to their high speed and size, the tsunami waves can wipe out
entire coastal settlements.
• If a tsunami reaches land the effects can include loss of human and
animal life, devasting property damage, severe flooding, and disease

How to protect ourselves from Natural
Disasters?
Earthquake- Crawl under a table and cover your face and head with your arms.
Volcanic Eruptions- Pay attention to warnings, and obey instructions from local
authorities. For example, stay indoors until local health officials tell you it is safe
to go outside.
Tsunamis- If you're not sure whether a building still has water in it or not, try to
look through a window to see. Avoid going inside if you're not sure.
Landslides- If you see springs or puddles in areas of the ground that are
usually dry, this could be a sign of an imminent landslide.
