LEARN / KNOW IT
A geometric sequence is a sequence in w/c each term
after the first can be obtained by multiplying the preceding
term by a fixed constant called the common ratio or denoted
by r.

In a geometric sequence , we can obtain r or

common ratio by dividing any term by the preceding
term.
Ex. #1
 Look at these numbers closely 4, 8, 16, 32, 64..
from the numbers, we can say that the second number is
twice the first number. This means that
4x2=8

Again, look at the third number. Isn’t it 8x2=16

What about 32? Isn’t this equal to 2x16?
To find the common ratio we will divide any term by
preceding term ….

 So 8=2, 16 = 2
4 8

 So its very clear here that the common ratio is 2

So, we can make the following table.

Examine the ff. sequence of numbers:
-2 , -6 ,-18 , -54….Find the common ratio and
the fifth term.

 Find the common ratio.

-6 = 3 or -18 = 3
-2 -6
 Therefore the common ratio or r = 3
 The fifth term is -54x3 = -162

Ex. 1. Mrs Nanet spends her time during quarantine by

raising chickens.Raising chickens is a good source of
additional income specially when the area is in lowland
rice field…Nanet started raising her chicken, she made a
record of the production of eggs as her chicken starts
laying eggs.She made a tally of the number of eggs her
chicken laid each day.
The table below shows her tally

1.How many eggs are laid after 5th day? 6th day ?
2. If someone ordered her 1250 eggs. How many
days does it take for her to gather that number
of eggs.
Solution #1 :
Find the common ratio:
40 = 2 or 80 = 2 , 2 is the common ratio
20 40
 For the 5th day that is 160x2 = 320 eggs
For the 6th day that is 320x2 = 640 eggs
Answer #2
 After 7 days or 1 week that is 640 x 2 = 1280 eggs
 So it takes 7 days or 1 week to complete the ordered
eggs.
