Design Factors- Design Wheel Load

Hasan Wahqhan M N
Assistant Professor
Dept. of Civil Engineering.
Design Factors.
• Design Wheel Load
– Maximum Wheel Load
– Contact Pressure
– ESWL
– Repetition of loads
• Subgrade Soil
• Climatic Factors
• Pavement Component materials
• Drainage and Environmental factors.
Design Wheel Load-Repetition of Loads
Effect of Repeated Application of Wheel Load.
• Effect of Repeated Application of Wheel Load on
flexible pavement.
Higher number of repetitions requires higher thickness.
Deformation
Plastic Deformation accumulates- RUTTING
• Effect of number of repetition of different magnitudes
of loads
Traffic composition in India- mixed
Convert various wheel load to one standard wheel load.

Equivalent Wheel Load Factors(EWLF/VDF)
• Equivalent Wheel Load Factors are made use of
to convert daily traffic count of each category of
axle or wheel load for the purpose of flexible
pavement design.
• Light vehicles are negligible
• EWLF=(given wheel load/standard wheel load)⁴
• As per IRC:37 -2001 VDF of different magnitudes
of single and tandem axle are given as follows

Subgrade Soil
• Properties of subgrade and its support to the
pavement layers above are important in
deciding in thickness requirement of flexible
pavement.
• Lower stability --- Thicker pavement
• CBR Value
• Variation in stability and stability and volume
of subgrade soil with moisture changes are to
be studied.

Frost Action.
Factors on which frost action depends.
• Frost susceptible soil
• Depressed temperature below freeing point
