SAFETY
CHEMICAL SAFETY
Chemical is any element, chemical compound, or mixture of element and/or compounds.
While safety, by definition, is being secure from undergoing or causing hurt, injury, or loss.
Hazard is an item or condition which poses potential risk to safety or health.

Chemical Safety is being secure from undergoing or causing hurt, injury, or loss when
working with elements, chemical compounds, or mixtures of elements and/or compounds.

Chemical Hazards are elements, chemical compounds, or mixtures of elements and/or

compounds which poses potential risk to safety or health.
Corrosives

A chemical that causes visible destruction

or irreversible alterations in living tissue
by chemical action at the site of contact.

● ACIDS ● BASES

Highly Toxic Chemicals

A chemical that has a median lethal

dose (LD50) of 50 milligrams or less
per kilogram of body weight when
administered orally to albino rats
weighing between 200 and 300 grams
each
Carcinogens

is any substance, radionuclide, or radiation that promotes carcinogenesis, the

formation of cancer. This may be due to the ability to damage the genome or to the
disruption of cellular metabolic processes.
Teratogens and Mutagens

Teratogens - can cause malformations of an embryo or fetus.

Mutagens- can cause an increase in the rate of change in genes.( subsection of the DNA of the
body's cells ). These mutations(changes) can be passed along as the cell reproduces. Sometimes
leading to defective cells or cancer.

Irritant & Sensitizers

Irritant- A chemical, which is not corrosive, but which causes a reversible inflammatory effect on
living tissue by chemical action at the site of contact.

Sensitizers- A chemical that causes a substantial proportion of exposed people or animals to

develop an allergic reaction in normal tissue after repeated exposure to the chemical.

ROUTES OF
BODY ENTRY
Routes of Exposure

1. Inhalation
2. Ingestion
3. Body Contact
4. Body Absorption

Physical Hazards - Body contact via fire, pressure

Health Hazards - all the above

Hazardous Chemical Exposure

Exposure Limits

1. Permissible Exposure Limits - (PEL's)

2. Recommended Exposure Limits - (REL's)
3. Threshold Limit Values - (TVL)
4. Short-term Exposure Limits- (STEL's)
5. Threshold Limit Value Ceiling -( TVL-C)

Exposure Assessment

1. Contaminant Sampling
2. Air Monitoring
3. Medical Surveillance

RISK OF
HAZARDOUS
CHEMICALS
“HAZARDOUS
CHEMICAL”

Simple Definition Regulatory Definition

elements, chemical compounds, means any chemical which
or mixtures of elements and/or presents a physical hazard or
compounds which poses a health hazard.
potential risk to safety or health.
WHAT IS A PHYSICAL HAZARD
Physical Hazard - Means a chemical
for which there is scientifically valid
evidence that it is a

a. Combustible liquid
b. Explosive
c. Organic peroxide
d. Pyrophoric
e. Compressed Gas
f. Flammable
g. Oxidizer
h. Unstable (reactive) or water-reactive.
PHYSICAL HAZARD CATEGORIES

A. Fire Hazards

1. Flammable gas
2. Flammable aerosol
3. Flammable solid
4. Flammable liquid
5. Combustible liquid
6. Oxidizer
7. Pyrophoric
PHYSICAL HAZARD CATEGORIES

B. Explosion Hazard

1. Compressed Gas
2. Explosive

C. Reactive Hazards
3. Organic peroxide
4. Unstable (reactive)
5. Water-Reactive)
WHAT IS A HEALTH HAZARD

Health Hazard - means a chemical for

which at least one study conducted in
accordance with established scientific
principles has found statistically significant
evidence that acute or chronic health
effects may occur in exposed employees.
HEALTH HAZARD CATEGORIES

1. Carcinogen
2. Toxic Agent
3. Highly toxic agent
4. Corrosive
5. Irritant
6. Sensitizer

HOW CAN YOU TELL IF THE CHEMICAL
YOU ARE WORKING WITH IS
HAZARDOUS?
● Perform a Hazard Determination
● Review the container label
● Review the Material Safety Data Sheet
● Contact EHS dept.
HAZARD
DETERMINATION
Chemical manufacturers and importers are
required to evaluate chemicals they produce
or import to determine if they are hazardous

This include assessment for both physical

and health hazards.
CONTAINER LABELING
The chemical manufacturer, importer, ore
distributor is required to ensure that each container
of hazardous chemical leaving their workplace is
labeled, tagged or marked with the following
information:

● Identity of the hazardous chemical:

● Appropriate hazard warnings and;

● Name and address of the responsible party.

WHAT IS AN MSDS?

What is an MSDS? "Material safety data sheet

(MSDS)" means written or printed material
concerning a hazardous chemical which is
prepared in accordance with the OSHA Hazard
Communication Standard.
