This passage has many unfamiliar words. Some of these

words you might use in classes at school, hear on the
news, or read in the newspaper. Others of these words
are highly specialized vocabulary used by people who
write about literature. When you read a passage with
many unfamiliar words, try to discern the new terms
that will best help you understand the main idea of the
passage. You may not have time to look up all the
unfamiliar words. Spend the most time on repeated
terms that will help you unlock the main ideas.

the following graphic organizer. First, infer the
meaning by using context clues, or words and phrases
that help explain the meaning. Write what you think
the word means. Then look up the definition of the
word in an online dictionary. The first word has been
done for you.

As you determine the definitions of new words,

look for word parts that you already know and
understand. Consider the word perception found
in the passage. You may already know the word
perceive is a verb that means “to understand.” If
you know that -tion is a noun ending, you can
determine that perception is “the act of
understanding or knowing something.”

Focus on New Words, pp. 70-72
Use this strategy to determine the meanings and parts of speech
for the words in the chart below. Begin by determining the part of
speech (noun, verb, adjective). Use suffix patterns to help you.

• nouns often end in -ion/-tion, -ology, -ance or -ence

• adjectives often end in -ic, -ful, -al, -able, -ive, -ous
• adverbs often end in –ly

In rows 3 and 4, find a related word on your own. Use a dictionary

to clarify word meanings and parts of speech.
