This tense form can be in between other events and can also be combined with other events at the same time. PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE FORMULA The formula used in these tenses is as follows: • Positive sentence : Positive: Subject + was/ were + Ving • Negative sentence : Subject + was/ were + not + Ving • Question sentence: Was/were + Subject + Ving • The past continuous tense is formed with the auxiliary verb "be", in the form of was or were. This is because the past tense (happened in the past), and the present participle. • Was for singular subject in the form of singular noun (such as: Andi, book, and cat) and singular pronoun (such as: I, she, he, and it) except "you". • On the other hand, were, which is a plural verb, is used in plural subjects such as plural nouns (such as cats, people, books) and plural pronouns (such as you, they, we, and cats), and you. Examples of past continuous sentences : • He was studying when she called • Was she studying when she called? • She was not studying when she called USE OF TIME • In subsequent uses, the past continuous tense uses a specific time as an interrupter in an event. In the simple past tense, a specific adverb of time is used to indicate an event begins or ends. Consider the following example: • • Last night at 6 PM, I was eating dinner. • • At midnight, we were still driving through the desert. USE OF EVENTS The past continuous tense can also be used to express parallel events in the past. When you use this tense with two events in the same sentence, it will give rise to the idea if both events have happened at the same time. Example : • She was studying while I was making dinner. • What were you doing while you were waiting? USE OF WORD In the use of the past continuous tense, it is often found the use of the words while or when. It needs to be looked after carefully. When is usually followed by a Verb2 verb and while is followed by a past continuous tense. Example : • I was studying when Jane called. • While I was studying, Jane called.
