• Netflix was founded on August 29, 1997, by Marc Randolph and

Wilmot Reed Hastings. Its headquarter is in Los Gatos, California,
United States.
• The company’s purpose is “to entertain the world,” and its mission
statement is generally based on its nature of providing on-demand
movie streaming services (Todorova, 2020).
• Initially, the company sold and rented DVDs; however, it eliminated
sales after a year to focus on DVD rentals and introduced streaming
and video on-demand services in 2007.

• Currently, the company provides services to more than 222 million

• The two mainly used strategies for competitive advantage are cost
leadership and Differentiation. Cost leadership allows the company to
provide its services at low costs, acquiring more customers in the online
entertainment market (Cebeci et al., 2019).
• Through intensive growth strategies that the company uses, the strategy
allows it to gain the biggest market share regarding the international online
entertainment industry. 
• The company uses a differentiation strategy to develop its online business
and products to distinguish the organization from competitors.
• The strategy allows the firm to attract and retain customers, thus
supporting its intensive growth strategies.

• The various strategies that the company can use to improve its
performance include market development, market penetration, and

• The organization uses services that are based on hard disk drives
and flash drives.

• The organization invests more resources to ensure that customers are satisfied
with its services.
• The organization embraces new technology within the system, which allows it to
use efficient and economical methods like big data tools and cloud storage to
perform different tasks. The system is associated with fewer failures, making it

• The organization’s use of its information system is associated with success. Its
success heavily relies on its information technology approach and information
system (Cebeci et al., 2019).
• Through the various components of the information system, the company
manages to gather and analyze users' information to recommend the best
movies based on their preferences and other factors like location.

• The major problems that Netflix is currently experiencing regarding

its information are security threats to its data, especially from the
clients’ side, and internet infrastructure problems.
• The company should improve security to counter a new threat that
occurs in movie streaming over torrent networks.
• The company should improve its telecommunication services,
especially in markets facing access challenges. This includes
focusing on Over the Top (OTT) platforms to ensure that subscribers
worldwide can access and use Netflix’s streaming services over the
internet.

• Information system plays a critical role in Netflix's success and

position in the entertainment industry.
• Using an information system significantly improves its performance
and ensures scalability, reliability, high availability, and low latency,
essential in the online streaming business.
