JUAN SANTAMARIA
• Juan Santamaria was born on
August 29, 1831, in Alajuela, Costa
Rica. 
• At the time Cartago was the capital
of Costa Rica, following Costa Rica’s
independence in 1821. 
• He died on April 11, 1856 in Rivas,
Nicaragua during the second battle of
Rivas.
CARMEN LYRA
• Carmen Lyra was the pseudonym of the
first prominent female Costa Rican writer,
• María Isabel Carvajal Quesada was born
on January 15th,1888 in San José and died
on May 14th, 1949.
• In 1920, she published her most well-
known work Los Cuentos de Mi Tia
Panchita (Tales of My Aunt Panchita), a
collection of folk tales.
FAMOUS PEOPLE
• Franklin Ramón Chang-
Díaz (born April 5th, 1950) is
a Costa Rican American 
• mechanical engineer, physicist
 and former NASA astronaut. 
• Óscar Arias Sánchez, born 13 September
1940 in Heredia, Costa Rica) is a:
• Costa Rican activist and 
Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
• He was President of Costa Rica from
1986 to 1990 and from 2006 to 2010.
• He received the Nobel Peace Prize in
1987 for his efforts to end the 
Central American crisis
