Wave cut platforms

By Farah, Omar, Zaid and Mohammad Osman

What is a wave cut platform?
A wave-cut platform is also known as an Abrasion Platform.
It is a gently sloping rock ledge that extends from the high-tide level at the
steep-cliff base to below the low-tide level. It develops as a result of wave
abrasion; beaches protect the shore from abrasion and therefore prevent the
formation of platforms.
In simple words, a wave cut platform is a wide gently-sloping surface found at the
foot of a cliff.
How are wave cut platforms
formed?
A wave-cut platform is formed when the
following occurs:
1.
The sea and waves attacks the base of the cliff
between the high and low water mark.
2.
By erosional processes such as abrasion and
hydraulic action, a wave cut notch is formed.
3.
Over time, the notch increases in size and the
cliff becomes unstable and collapses. This
leading to the retreat of the cliff face.
4.
The backwash carries away the eroded
material, leaving a wave-cut platform.
5.
The process repeats. The cliff continues to
retreat
An example of wave-cut platform
A wave-cut platform is formed when the sea
attacks a weakness in the base of the cliff. For
example, this could be a joint in chalk. A wave-cut
notch is created by erosional processes such as
hydraulic action and abrasion, Basically a wave-
cut platform is a wide gently-sloping surface
found at the foot of a cliff.
In other words..
A wave cut platform is created when:
The sea hits a weak spot in the cliff's base. This could be a chalk joint,
for example.
Erosional processes such as hydraulic action and abrasion produce a
wave-cut notch.

The cliff becomes unstable as the notch grows larger, and gravity
causes it to fall.
The cliff begins to recede inland.
The eroded and transported material from the crumbled cliff face. As a
result, a wave-cut platform is created.
Over time, the process repeats itself.
