Background of The Study
● The Faculty of Education and Social Sciences (FPSS), Universiti Selangor
(UNISEL) in Bestari Jaya, Kuala Selangor has taken several steps in
shaping human capital development among students. In conjunction, FPSS
have implemented a mentor-mentee system known as the ‘Mentor-Mentee
Program’ as the guiding and educating methodology in its undergraduate
curriculum since Semester January 2017.
Problem Statement
● Since its implementation, there is no evaluation on the impact of the mentoring
system being formally done.

● According to Peter Hudson (2016), obstacles to successful mentoring

relationships mainly involve a mentor’s lack of support for the mentee, poor
interpersonal skills, and inadequate time for two-way dialoguing.

● Cheah W. L, et al (2013) stated that by understanding the needs of mentees, a

well-tailored mentoring program would contribute more to the success of
mentoring.
Significance of the Study
● This study is important for the mentors
in the TESL Department to be informed
of what type of mentoring relationship
that the mentees seek with their
mentors.
Literature Review
1. Perception Towards Mentor-Mentee Program

Cheah Whye Lian, et.al 2013 found that majority of mentees had positive perception on this system
and benefited from this system.

2. The Effectiveness of Mentor-Mentee Program

According to DuBois, Portillo, Rhodes, Silverthorn, & Valentine (2011), mentoring programs in the
United States have become increasingly popular as a strategy for promoting positive behavioral,
academic, and psychological outcomes.

3. The Challenge in Mentor-Mentee Program

Mentees did not like to share their secrets because mentors have no positive vibes with them, and
when there is no trust in a relationship, it becomes stressful and mentees become self-protective
(Sehrish, 2020).
Research Objectives
1. To examine the UniSEL TESL undergraduates’ perception regarding the
effectiveness of the Mentor-Mentee Program.

2. To identify the ways to assist the TESL Department in improving the Mentor-
Mentee Program.

Research Questions
1. What is the perception of the UniSEL TESL undergraduates’ regarding the
effectiveness of the Mentor-Mentee Program?

2. What are the ways to assist the TESL Department in improving the Mentor-
Mentee Program?
Methodology
● A quantitative approach

● Survey method

● Research design: descriptive analysis

● Data collection: Google Form

● Data analysis: Microsoft Excel version 2201

● 101 undergraduate students from each 8 semesters of B.

Ed (Hons) TESL ranging from 19-25 years old

CONCLUSION
The findings showed that the majority of mentees had a positive perception

of this system and benefited from this system in three aspects: academic

support, personal development and emotional and psychological support in

general. This study also indicated that the majority of the participants

requested to have more activities in the Mentor-Mentee Program to make it

more effective than before.

Limitation
● The respondents in Semesters 3, 6, and 7 are fewer than 10
students.

● The number of male respondents is not even half the total

number of respondents (32.7%).

Recommendation
● More precise methods, such as qualitative research methods
could be used to study mentee’s perceptions in greater depth
(interviews or focus groups).

● Future studies should include the mentors' perspectives to

complete the understanding of the Mentor-Mentee system.
