📌What do you notice about the moon's
shape from night to night?
📌Does the moon really change in
shape?
OBJECTIVES:

Observed the phases of the moon.

Identify the phases of the moon.

Illustrate the phases of the moon in

order.
MOON (LUNA)
•known as the natural satellite of
the earth.

•It is a huge, heavy ball of rocks. It

is not made of gases. It is as hard
as the earth.

•The moon does not produce its

own light. It reflects light from the
sun and throws back the light to us.
It acts as a large mirror in space,
reflecting the light of the sun.
MOON
• it revolves around the earth. At the
same time, it rotates on its own axis.
• The moon rotates once on its axis as
it makes one revolution around the
earth.
• A moon makes one complete
revolution around the earth in 27 1/3 to
29 1/2 days.
Rotation is when a
planet or a moon
spins on its axis.
When a planet or
moon travels
around an object,
this is considered
as a revolution.

The Phases of the moon

New moon
 During this phase the
moon is between Earth
and the sun, which means
none of the lunar half we
see is illuminated, and the
moon becomes nearly
invisible in the night sky.
We can see the moon in
this phase only during a
solar eclipse.
NEW MOON PHASE
The Phases of the moon

Waxing crescent moon

 It is when small part of the
moon’s surface is being
illuminated and becomes
visible. The moon appears to
be filling out. Its full name is
waxing crescent moon. A
waxing moon is growing full
each night. Waxing means it is
getting bigger.
Crescent means less
than half full

The Phases of the moon

First Quarter
 The right side of the moon
appears bright and the left
side appears dark.
 The bright side of the
moons become larger and
larger until it reaches full
moon.
 It is considered as half
moon.

Waxing Gibbous
The moon is more than
half full and still
increasing its
illuminated surface.
More than half of the Waxing
bigger.
means it is getting

which is larger than the
semicircle shape of the Moon at
First Quarter, but smaller than a
full circle.

The Phases of the moon

Full moon
 the whole side of the Moon
facing the Earth becomes
lighted. The Sun and Moon
appear opposite to each other
in the sky. Full moon rises as
the sun sets.
 The moon is behind Earth with
respect to the sun, and its
face is fully illuminated. This is
when we can sometimes see
lunar eclipse.
FULL MOON
The Phases of the moon

Waning Gibbous
 This is the stage when
the moon is more than
half lit but the
illuminated surface we
can see is decreasing.
 waning gibbous

of the Moon at First Quarter, but

of the earth?
3.How many days before the
moon complete revolution
around the earth?

eclipse?

statement holds true.

moon.
