Self-actualization Theory
 Maslow theory of motivation is popularly
known as “ hierarchy of Needs”. This
theory is also called Gratification theory”
Abraham Maslow, the famous psychologist
provides a hierarchical structure of the
human needs.
Maslow’s Assumptions
 Human nature is
basically good, not
evil
 Normal human
development
involves the
actualization of
this inherent
goodness

MOST NEEDS HAVE TO DO WITH


SURVIVAL PHYSICALLY AND
PSYCHOLOGICALLY

PHYSIOLOGICAL NEEDS
1. Physiological Needs
 These needs are for air, food, water, sleep,
sex and sensory satisfaction.

 Hungry children manifests inability to pay


attention to classroom activities.

ON THE WHOLE AN INDIVIDUAL
CANNOT SATISFY ANY LEVEL
UNLESS NEEDS BELOW ARE
SATISFIED

2. Safety Needs
 Neglected children appears to be dominated
by safety seeking behaviour if their
physiological needs are satisfied.

 Because of the need for safety, children


prefer care during illness.

3.Love and Belonging Needs
 When both physiological and safety needs
are satisfied the need for love, affection and
belongingness will emerge.
 The affection or love relationship is

between sweet hearts, married people,


parents and children and between close
friends.
 In our society, the need for belongingness is

a necessity today.

4. Self- Esteem Needs
 All people need a high evaluation of
themselves. This entails a self respect and
esteem from others.
 This need is satisfied by

a. Confidence and independence


b. Recognition, attention and appreciation
from others.

5. Achievement Needs
 They may be classified as need for knowledge and
the need for understanding.
 Need for knowledge is satisfied when there is

access to information, knowing how to do things,


meaning of things, events, symbols etc.
 Needs for understanding implies knowledge of

relationships, process, the integration of knowledge


into broad structure etc.
 Achievement needs are related to intellectual

domination and cognitive competencies.;

6. Aesthetic Needs
 Concerned with appreciation of order and
beauty. One whose lower order needs are
fully satisfied or knows that he need not
bother about them, derives pleasure in
beauty, nature etc.
 Tagore , Wordsworth etc. are the best

examples for this.

7. Self Actualization
 It is the highest need in the hierarchical
system. It means “ To fulfils one’s
individual nature in all aspects, being what
one can be”

Educational Implication

 A teacher should see that pupils before him


are free from problems, related to their
physical needs.
 Children must feel secure that they enjoy
the love of the teacher and friends, that
develop the sense of belongingness.
Nobody can do
everything,

but we can nearly all


do more than we
think we can
