Geometric portraits

By Gordon Magnin
Artist research on Gordon Magnin
Basic information
The name of the photographer is Gordon Magnin and he was
born in Nevada, America. The photos that I am looking at, are
geometric portraits, and some of them are found in magazines,
they are published from 2010-2012. This particular image is
untiled (model), and it was published in a magazine in 2012,
and the image is a geometric portrait.
Visual qualities
The photograph shows digital manipulation of the model face,
he has made geometric cuts in the shapes of triangles and has
rearranged them. My eyes are drawn to the rearranged
triangles on the model face, and the way you can see different
parts of the face scattered across it, this is what I like about the
image. Gordon Magnin has used the composition style, filling
the frame, he has positioned the model so there is a small
section of negative space is seen, this gives an effect that he
has used the space efficiently. They have most likely used a
studio lights, there is most likely one on the right-hand side
facing the model and one from above the model and another
studio light straight on. I cannot tell anything from their facial
expression, as it is turned into geometric shapes. Formal
elements that are used, are, shapes and colour.

Camera settings
They have focused the camera on the model's face. Magnin
has used aperture in the form of  long depth of field as a
majority of the image is in focus. Magnin has probably used a
low shutter speed as it is a still image, so probably 1/40.
Relate to own work
When planning my photos, Magnin will influence me by the
way he has set up his camera and positioned the model in the
right way. Also, it seems he has set up the studio around him,
the way the studio lights have been set up to create a crisp
side lighting effect. When editing my photo, I will take into
account the way he has arranged the triangles and has placed
them in different places.
