INTRODUCTION
• Taguchi method is a special method developed
by the Genichi Taguchi.
• The method basically used to produce
ROBUST processes and aimed to attain their
properties in different environmental
condition.
• Taguchi method reduces the variability of the
response to maximize robustness.
CONTD..
• The key tool of the taguchi method is the design
of experiment.
• It uses the statistically planned experiment to
reduce variation in quality.
• It mainly aims to optimized the process and to
achieve the robust design(a design that results in
products or services that can function over a
broad range of usage and environmental
condition)
BRIEF OF TAGUCHI METHOD
• Conventional design of experiment focuses on
the average response.
• Quality engineering focuses on variability of
the response.
• Taguchi has developed a Loss function which
typically assumed loss to the customer.
• It mainly focuses on off-line quality control.
CONTD..

• Taguchi’s product design approach:

1. System design
2. Parameter design(Robust design
step,Quality engineering)
3. Tolerence design
• Taguchi used orthogonal arrays to find only
the main effects that effects the optimization
of the process.
CONTD…
• Orthogonal array include only the effect of the
main factors rather than the interaction
between them yet it gives the optimized
process.
• Taguchi method have highest efficiency.

ABSTRACT
• In this study, Taguchi’s design of experiment
method and analysis of variance (ANOVA)
were applied .
• In order to find optimum operating parameters
giving the best engine performance and exhaust
emissions with a minimum number of the
engine tests in a spark ignition (SI) engine
fueled with pure gasoline,ethanol and
methanol.
CONTD…
• For this purpose, the test engine was operated
under different compression ratio(CR), engine
speed and ignition .
• As a result of verification experiment,
optimization made by reducing (to about 89%)
test number with help of Taguchi was achieved
within 95% confidence interval.
CONTD..
• On the other hand, the engine performance and
regular brake specific exhaust emission results
obtained from optimized engines generally
have improved when compared to those of the
baseline engine. (IT).
CONTD..
• Taguchi technique computes a signal-to-noise
(S/N) ratio based on experimental data. This
ratio defines an experiment level which gives
the best performance in the test variables .
• In addition, the effect of test parameters on the
experiment outputs is statistically demonstrated
by ANOVA analysis.
• Therefore, with the help of both S/N ratio and
ANOVA,engine operating parameters can be
determined to provide optimum performance.
CONTD..
• In this paper, Taguchi’s L9 orthogonal array
was used to define the optimal operating
parameters in terms of engine performance
• for an SI engine which is run at different
engine speeds (A), ignition timing
(B),compression ratio(C).

CONTD..
• In this paper, the optimal operating conditions
providing the best engine performance and
exhaust emissions in an SI engine fueled with
gasoline, pure ethanol and methanol are
defined by using Taguchi method and ANOVA
analysis.
• The optimum operating conditions are
searched under three different CR, IT and
engine speeds with three levels.
COCLUSION
• The estimated results obtained from Taguchi’s
test design are compatible with the
confirmation experiments within the 95%
confidence interval. This shows that the design
of an experiment with Taguchi method is
usable to define optimum working conditions
in internal combustion engine tests.
• Moreover, because the number of experiments
with this method decreases about 89%..
CONTD..
• It provides a high time savingThe baseline
engine represents the results of test outputs at
original operating parameters (which is 8.5 of
CR,23 CA of IT, and 2400 rpm of engine
speed) for all fuels.
• According to the general optimization results
obtained from ANOVA, engine speed and CR
values, providing the best engine performance
for gasoline, pure ethanol and methanol are
2400 rpm and 9.0 of CR.
CONTD..
• In addition, while optimal IT for ethanol and
methanol is 20 CA, it is 26 CA in gasoline
CONTD..
• BEP and BTE values with pure gasoline,
ethanol and methanol at optimized engine are
found to be higher than that of gasoline at
baseline engine.
• Also, the highest value of the BTE (about
32.5%) reached with using methanol at
optimized engine. BSFC with the use of pure
ethanol and methanol as compared to gasoline
• increases in general.
CONTD..
• However, with optimized engine, BSFC
decreases on average 15.64% compared to that
baseline engine for all fuel types.
• Exhaust emission levels in the engine are
important in terms of environmental pollution.
The alternative fuels are expected to give good
performance in the internal combustion
engine.
• The greenhouse gases such as BSCO2 and
BSNO are also desired a decreasing.
