The verb "use" means "to use" or "to

in the past simple, plus the preposition something that happened or happened in the
“to”, as a modal verb, the meaning past on a regular basis. Also, it is used for
changes. Also, “used to” can be used something that used to be true but is no longer

explanation of the different uses. followed by the base form of the verb (the
infinitive without "to").

When "used to" is used as an adjective it means "to be used to".

It is used for things that are familiar, normal, or common and
can be used in any tense. When “to be used to” is followed by a

Differences from the simple past in English

The simple past in English has two main uses: one-off actions in the
past and situations or status that took place in the past.

For its part, "used to" is used to communicate repeated actions or

habits in the past and facts that were true a while ago, but are no
longer true.
How to use it

It is a simple structure, since it basically consists of adding the

infinitive of the main verb to the modal verb. Thus, when writing or
uttering affirmative phrases, the dynamic would be:

Subject + Used to + Main verb

I used to play tennis when I was a child until I discovered handball –

I played tennis as a child until I discovered handball.
To use it in a negative way, the structure is similar, but adding the
auxiliary "didn't", that is, "do" in past and in negative.

Subject + "didn't"/"did not" + Use to + Main verb

When I lived in UK, food didn't use to be really tasty – When I lived
in the UK, the food used to be very tasty.
I didn't use to like apples, but now I'm addicted to them – I didn't like
apples, but now I'm addicted to them.
