Possessive adjectives
• In both English and German, possessive adjectives indicate
ownership or belonging.

What are they?
• Used to show possession/ownership of a person, place, or
thing.
•A possessive is ALWAYS followed by a noun!
• In English:
• My, your, his, her, their, and our
Examples:
• My dog
• Our cat
• Their classes
• His pants
• Her attitude

What are they in German?
• They coincide with pronouns on chart:
• When you use possessives you will either use the base
form or add an –e to the end of the possessive.
• How do you know which to use?
• IF your noun that follows it is a feminine or a plural
noun, you add an –E
• If your noun is a der or a das word, it remains the same.
Examples:
• meine Mutter
• unser Bruder
• seine Schwester
• ihre Oma
• eure Geschwister
A couple other words:
• There are two other words that work the EXACT
same way as possessives.
• ein and kein – a and no/none
• Examples:
• A dog – ein Hund
• No cat – keine Katze

Possessive adjectives
• Like other ein-words, their endings change according to the gender, case,
and number of the object possessed.

Possessive adjectives
• Like other ein-words, possessive adjectives have no added endings before
singular masculine or neuter nouns in the nominative, or before singular
neuter nouns in the accusative.
Wo sind Ihre Eltern? Rolf und Heike kochen für ihre Kinder.
Where are your parents? Rolf and Heike cook for their children.
