WHAT IS CORROSION?
Corrosion is a natural process, which converts a
refined metal to a more chemically-stable form, such
as its oxide, hydroxide, or sulfide. It is the gradual
destruction of materials (usually metals) by chemical
and/or electrochemical reaction with their
environment.
CORROSION TYPES

 Uniform Corrosion. Uniform corrosion is considered an even attack across the surface

of a material and is the most common type of corrosion. ...
1. Pitting Corrosion. ...
2. Crevice Corrosion. ...
3. Intergranular Corrosion. ...
4. Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) ...
5. Galvanic Corrosion. ...
6. Conclusion
Difference between Corrosion and Rusting
What is Anticorrosion?

 Anti-corrosion refersto the protection of metal

surfaces from corroding in high-risk (corrosive)
environments. When metallic materials are put
into corrosive environments, they tend to have
chemical reactions with the air and/or water.
The effects of corrosion become evident on the
surfaces of these materials.
 Coating and Paints are used as anticorrosive.
Role of PAINTS as Anticorrosive:

 Painting treatments on the surface: Another way to

protect metal housings from corrosion is by using
anti-corrosive paint or powder coat on the metallic
surface. The function of this coating is to act as a
barrier that inhibits contact between chemical
compounds or corrosive materials with the metal
housing.

WHAT IS COPPER?

 Copper is a chemical element

with symbol Cu.
 Atomic number 29.
 Itis a soft, malleable, and ductile
metal with very high thermal and
electrical conductivity.
A freshly exposed surface of pure
copper has a pinkish-orange color.
Corrosion of Copper
Copper turns green because of chemical reactions with
the elements. Just as iron that is left unprotected in
open air will corrode and form a flaky orange-red
outer layer, copper that is exposed to the elements
undergoes a series of chemical reactions that give the
shiny metal a pale green outer layer called a patina
Corrosion on copper material
Methods To Avoid Copper from Corrosion

1. Grease. By using some kind of grease, such as a layer of

Vaseline, over the copper you can prevent copper
corrosion.
2. Sealer. Employing a paint sealer to keep air off the
copper is another good way to stop copper corrosion.
3. Cleaning.
4. Coat It With Oil
5. Galvanizing
6. Electroplating
Roll of Oil and paints as Anticorrosive
 As oil and water do not mix with each
other, oiling forms a protective coating for the
metal and hence prevent it
from rusting. Oil can penetrate the oxide-water
on the metal and stabilize it. It also goes into
holes, nooks, and restricted areas on the metal
and again prevents it from corrosion.
 Corrosion can be prevented by removing one of
these conditions. Coating a metal surface
with paint or enamel provides a barrier between
the metal and the moisture in the environment.
The process of coating a metal surface with
another metal that is more likely to be oxidized
is referred to as sacrificial coating.
Galvanizing

 Pure copper cannot be galvanized because
there is no iron for the zinc to metallurgically
react with. Without a metallurgical reaction,
a galvanized coating cannot develop. Some
steel chemistries with small amounts
of copper can be successfully galvanized.

Rusting of Iron
And
How to Avoid it?
IRON

“Iron is a chemical
element with symbol Fe and
atomic number 26”
Properties Of Zinc

Type Property
Symbol  Fe
Appearance Earth Crust
Density 7.87
Structure Body Centered Cubic
Group , Block 8,D
Element Category Metal
Corrosion Of Iron

The corrosion of iron, better

known as rusting, is an
oxidation-reduction process
that destroys iron objects
left out in open, moist air.
What causes iron to rust?
It occurs when Iron, Oxygen
and Water combine. When
they combine,
the iron loses electrons to
oxygen atoms. This is
called oxidation and when
it happens it produces a
chemical reaction forming
Fe203 Iron Oxide.
How does corrosion occur in iron?

 Corrosion occurs in the

presence of moisture. For
example when iron is
exposed to moist air, it
reacts with oxygen to
form rust, The formation
of rust is a very complex
process which is thought
to begin with the
oxidation of iron to
ferrous ions.
Chemical Equation

  Oxidation half-reaction:
Fe(s) → Fe2+( aq) + 2e-
Reduction half-reaction:
O2(g) + 2H2O(l) + 4e- → 4OH-( aq)
Complete Equation:
4Fe + 3O2 → 2Fe2O3
Methods To Avoid Rusting

1. Paint

2. Coat It With Oil

3. Keep Moisture at Bay

4. Galvanizing
Galvanizing
 Galvanizing is a method
of rust prevention. This is
accomplished through hot-dip
galvanizing or electroplating.
The iron or steel object is
coated in a thin layer of zinc.
This stops oxygen and water
reaching
the metal underneath but the
zinc also acts as a
sacrificial metal.
Electroplating

 Electroplating is the process of plating one metal onto

another by hydrolysis, most commonly for decorative
purposes or to prevent corrosion of a metal.
 There are also specific types of electroplating
 Copper plating
 Silver plating
 Chromium plating
 Iron plating
Electroplating Of Iron
Keeping Corrosion Away Through Oil

When a layer of oil is applied

on the surface of metal, it cuts
its contact with air,
eventually preventing Oxidati
on. That is why we
apply Oil paints on metal
surfaces like Grills
to prevent them from rusting.
As well as tangible
water, oil also repels the
water that's present in oxygen

Paints as anticorrosive

 Corrosion is a severe problem affecting the life of any

element of the house made of steel or iron. Since paints
are devised for protecting metal surfaces.
 Anti corrosion coating allows added protection of metal
surfaces and acts as a barrier to inhibit the contact
between chemical compounds or corrosive materials. A
wide variety of anti corrosion coatings is available.
These types of anti corrosion coating are mostly applied
on iron or steel products. protecting metal surfaces
Composition:

 Anticorrosive paint is a composition of corrosion

resistant pigments such as zinc chromate, lead
chromate, zinc oxide, zinc dust, zinc chromate, or
red lead. Linseed oil is used as a binder in the anti
corrosive paint.
Properties of Anti Corrosive Paint:
 Anti corrosive paints should
have quick drying and
hardening properties. It has
good abrasion resistance,
good rust prevention, water
resistance and good impact
resistance. It is a cheap and
long lasting corrosion
protection.
Anti-corrosion Paints

1. Pure Epoxy
2. Modified Epoxy
3. Coal tar Epoxy
4. Solvent-free Epoxy
What is anti corrosive paint?
 Anti-corrosion refers to the protection of metal surfaces
from corroding in high-risk (corrosive) environments.
When metallic materials are put into corrosive
environments.

What is anti corrosion spray?

• Anti-corrosion coating allows for added protection of metal
surfaces and acts as a barrier to inhibit the contact between
chemical compounds or corrosive materials. ... Metal Coatings
provides both corrosion resistant bolt coating services and rust
protection fastener coating services to prevent rust and wear.
