The theory of social comparison (Leon Festinger, 1965) states that People have a natural need to assess
themselves. Individuals estimate their own social and personal value depending on how they compare to
others, according to social comparison theory. As a result, people create comparisons such as riches,
intelligence, and success. When it comes to social comparison, teenagers prefer to focus on attributes like
perceived beauty and popularity. They can also compare and contrast their strengths and capabilities, such
as athletic ability or creative talent. This form of comparison can sometimes drive teenagers to practice more
and excel in a certain area. It may also be demoralizing and cause a lot of anxiety. It all depends on what

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter discusses the research design, research locale, research respondents,
research instrument, gathering and processing of data, and analysis and treatment of data.
Research Design
According to (Burns and Grove, 2003) a research design is a blueprint for conducting a study with maximum
control over factors that may interfere with the validity of the findings”. Additionally, (Parahoo, 1997) describes a research
design as “a plan that describes how, when and where data are to be collected and analyzed”.In this study the researcher
wants to find out the effects of social media on the mental health of Grade 12 students of ACLC. Thus, the research design
that is used is descriptive that pertains to the quantitative method of research wherein describing the nature, characteristics
and components of the population or a phenomenon is concerned. This implies that the data gathered will pass through
descriptive statistics. It is also a type of non-experimental research in which the researcher summarizes the data in a

The respondents of the study will be from the SHS department of ACLC College. The
participants will be composed of 40 Senior High School Students and will be chosen randomly .
Research Instrument
The instrument used was a self-made research questionnaire. According to (Bell, 1999), a
a series of written questions for which the respondents has to provide the answers.
The type of questionnaire used was a structured instrument. According to Trueman (2015), closed or
structured questionnaires are a quantitative method of research, which was advocated by Emile Durkheim (1858
– 1917). It is a positivist research method. It includes the low level of involvement of the researcher and high
We will be using a survey administration software which is the Messenger forms. Each of these respondents
will be given a survey questionnaire checklist. The self-made questionnaire was composed of four (4) parts.
Part I was a fill in the blank on the profile wherein the respondents supplied the information needed for
the profile age, sex and year level. Part II was used to assess the level of knowledge of Grade12 Students
