SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The scope of our study is to uncover the effects of social media on the Mental Health of grade 12 students.
This study is delimited to the grade 12 students in ACLC College of Tacloban. The major impetus of our
research is to tip out the effects of social media on the Mental Health of the grade 12 students in title of their
performance on their school duties. This also centers on the positive and negative effects of social media of
grade 12 students and its connection to the mental health of the selected students. The study will be conducted
inside the ACLC COLLEGE OF TACLOBAN Campus. We will only get 40 respondents who are ACLC
students in Grade 12. This study will be done in (month) ,2022.
● THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
○ The significance of this study is to promote awareness towards mental health status of the students in
ACLC College of Tacloban upon using social media. We know how influential social media sites are
nowadays it contains news, entertainment, and many other content that makes it really amusing. much
more in our current situation that we're under this Covid-19 pandemic wherein staying home is really a
must therefore to spend some time, using your gadget is one of the main doings of everyone, gaining access
to social media sites. On the other hand, its downsides are making you change drastically on how you think,
act, and are. We tend to get addicted with this contents we see which is bad. While all things have a positive
and negative sides, now going back having your attention drawn while surfing through this sites you'll be
diverted from the real world, there's a probability that you'll be lazy for you can't do chores because you're
always at your phone and at this virtual world, another thing is that you can get influenced by what you see
that can you really adapt. It can cause you stress, dreadful, and the most dangerous effect is depression, you
can have this if what you are watching has this kind of environment which is terrifying as well as applying
it to your life. It is true that they all say social media is what unites us but the truth is that it makes us
alone. Having this type of study will surely have a waking up call on us being not to be too much addicted
on entering this world, yourself and how we think is much more greater than any sites in this world plus we
should take care of it because we only live once and we should cherish and treasure ourselves, therefore by
doing "small acts" can have a big effect on your life.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Theory of social comparison

The theory of social comparison (Leon Festinger, 1965) states that People have a natural need to assess

themselves. Individuals estimate their own social and personal value depending on how they compare to

others, according to social comparison theory. As a result, people create comparisons such as riches,

intelligence, and success. When it comes to social comparison, teenagers prefer to focus on attributes like

perceived beauty and popularity. They can also compare and contrast their strengths and capabilities, such

as athletic ability or creative talent. This form of comparison can sometimes drive teenagers to practice more

and excel in a certain area. It may also be demoralizing and cause a lot of anxiety. It all depends on what

kind of social comparison you're making.

Magic Bullet or Hypodermic Needle Theory

The number of direct impact effects was not as high as it should have been. Scholars generally agree, as

noted. The so-called "magic bullet" notion was not founded on evidence. insights from study, but rather on

preconceived notions about human nature at the moment. believed to be "Their biologically based 'instincts' rule

them consistently, and they behave in the same way. more or less evenly to whatever 'stimuli' came along" (Lowery

& De Fleur, 1995, p. 400). 'The' "According to the "Magic Bullet" hypothesis, the media's message is a bullet

launched from the "media." "gun" into the "head" of the spectator " (Berger 1995). The "Hypodermic Needle

Model" is similar. implies that media messages are sent directly to the passive audience (Croteau, Hoynes, 1997).

These communications have an instant impact on this passive audience.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the research design, research locale, research respondents,

research instrument, gathering and processing of data, and analysis and treatment of data.
Research Design

According to (Burns and Grove, 2003) a research design is a blueprint for conducting a study with maximum

control over factors that may interfere with the validity of the findings”. Additionally, (Parahoo, 1997) describes a research

design as “a plan that describes how, when and where data are to be collected and analyzed”.In this study the researcher

wants to find out the effects of social media on the mental health of Grade 12 students of ACLC. Thus, the research design

that is used is descriptive that pertains to the quantitative method of research wherein describing the nature, characteristics

and components of the population or a phenomenon is concerned. This implies that the data gathered will pass through

descriptive statistics. It is also a type of non-experimental research in which the researcher summarizes the data in a

statistical manner and analyses the data collected.

Figure 2. A map showing the Locale of the study

Figure 2, showed the aerial view of ACLC College of Tacloban City in where the study is

conducted. The school is offering all level of education. Basically, the research is conducted

in ACLC College of Tacloban City.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of the study will be from the SHS department of ACLC College. The

participants will be composed of 40 Senior High School Students and will be chosen randomly .

Research Instrument

The instrument used was a self-made research questionnaire. According to (Bell, 1999), a

questionnaire is essentially a structured technique for collecting primary data. It is generally

a series of written questions for which the respondents has to provide the answers.
The type of questionnaire used was a structured instrument. According to Trueman (2015), closed or

structured questionnaires are a quantitative method of research, which was advocated by Emile Durkheim (1858

– 1917). It is a positivist research method. It includes the low level of involvement of the researcher and high

number of respondents (the individuals who answer the questions).

We will be using a survey administration software which is the Messenger forms. Each of these respondents

will be given a survey questionnaire checklist. The self-made questionnaire was composed of four (4) parts.
Part I was a fill in the blank on the profile wherein the respondents supplied the information needed for

the profile age, sex and year level. Part II was used to assess the level of knowledge of Grade12 Students

of ACLC College of Tacloban towards social media consisting of 5 statements in which the respondents put

a yes or no on their corresponding choice. Part III was a checklist to find out the effects of Social Media

perceived by the respondent’s Mental health. It consisted of twelve (12) statements of perceived effects in

which the respondents put a check on their choice. Part IV was also a checklist to determine the

respondent’s interventions addressing mental wellness to the mental health of respondents against social. It

consisted of twelve (11) statements of effects of social media on mental health wherein the respondents

put a check on their choice.
