• 2.2.1 Separator - A separator is a vessel used in the field to remove wellstream liquid(s) from gas
components. The separator may be either two-phase or three-phase. Twophase separators remove the total
liquid from the gas, while three-phase separators also remove free water from the hydrocarbon liquid.
• 2.3 Maximum Allowable Working Pressure - The maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP) is the
maximum pressure, permissible by the ASME Code, at the top of the separator in its normal operating
position for a designated temperature.
• 2.4 Operating Pressure - The operating pressure is the pressure in the vessel during normal operation.
• The operating pressure shall not exceed the MAWP, and is usually kept at a suitable level below the setting
• of the pressure relieving devices to prevent their frequent opening. (See Appendix A.)
• 2.5 Corrosion. Corrosion is defined as the destruction of a metal by chemical or electrochemical reaction with
its environment. (See AppendiBx .)
