-- DESCRIBING USES
1. A BOX OF TISSUES
Is used for many things : blowing your nose,
wiping away the tears, for wiping babies’ bottom,
etc.
2. VAGINAL SPECULUM
is used for widening the vaginal passage for
examination or biopsy of the cervix.
3. STETHOSCOPE
is used for listening to heart sounds or pulse the
heartbeat.
4. OTOSCOPE
is used for examining the ear and for seeing the
tympanic membrane.
5. OPHTHALMOSCOPE
is an instrument with a concave mirror and a lens for
examining the interior of the eye through the pupil.
6. SCISSORS
they have different types and sizes are used for
cutting different things
7. STERIL GLOVES
are used for doing any sterile procedure and by all
the staff in the operating.
8. THERMOMETER
is used for measuring body temperature. This may
be taken orally, in the rectum.
9. SMALL BOWL
can be plastic or metal, sterilized or not and can be
used for holding antiseptics and other solutions or
as a container for gauze swabs, cotton balls, etc.
10. TAPE MEASURE
is used for measuring the girth of a patient
(the measurement of the abdomen), swollen
limbs and parts for prostheses.
11. PERCUSSION HAMMER
is used for testing reflexes.
12. COTTON BALLS
are used for applying solutions or for
removing nail polish.
13. SCALPEL HANDLE
is used to connect a sharp blade, forming a knife for
cutting delicate tissue.
14. TUBE OF LUBRICANT
is used to make it easier to pass tubes, optics
devices or a speculum into body orifices (openings).
15. SCALPEL BLADES
are used for cutting. They are packaged individually
and attached to a handle.
16. TORCH
is used mainly for seeing in the dark. A
smaller “pencil” torch is used for doing
neurological observations, for checking the
reaction of the eyes to light stimulus and also
for looking at the mouth and throat.
17. SKIN MARKING PENCIL
is used for marking areas usually before an
operation.
18. PAPER TOWEL
may be sterile or non-sterile and is multi-purpose : a
cover, a towel, a sterile wrapping, etc.
19. URINOMETER
is used for measuring the PH of urine.
20. KIDNEY DISH
a container to carry things or a bowl can be
sterilized and used for instruments such as scissors
and forceps when doing a sterile procedure.
21. SPHYGMOMANOMETER
is used for taking blood pressure.
22. PLAIN DISSECTING FORCEPS
are generally used for picking up something
or holding things when using a “no touch”
sterile technique.
23. TOUNGUE DEPRESSOR / SPATULA
is used for applying creams or lubricant.
