Tetra ammine copper(II) sulphate

complex [Cu(NH3)4]SO4
Aim: To prepare the pure sample of Tetra
amine copper(II) sulphate complex

Apparatus: 1.Conical flask 2.Beakers

3.Funnels 4.Glass rod 5.Measuring
jars
Chemicals :
1.C2H5OH Ethylalcohol

2.NH4OH Ammonium solution.

3. CuSO4 Copper sulphate

Principle: Copper sulphate reacts with
Ammonia to form Tetra amine
copper(II) sulphate complex.
Ethyl alcohol

CuSO4+4NH3 [Cu(NH3)4]SO4
Procedure :
The four steps involve during the formation of hydrated
tetraammine cupric sulphate complex given as

Step I Firstly dissolve 2.5 g of crystalline

CuSO4.5H2O in minimum amount of H2O
in 250 mL beaker. Now add few drop of
conc. H2SO4 to clear up the solution if
necessary.
Step II Add liquor ammonia to copper
sulphate solution from dropping funnel
with constant stirring until the blue
precipitate formed is dissolved to give a
Stepsolution.
deep III Now add 20 mL of ethyl alcohol
slowly with constant stirring to the deep
blue solution.
Step IV Then allow it to stand to slow
evaporation which gives long needle
shaped brilliant dark blueviolet crystal
of tetraamine cupric sulphate complex

Step V Filter and wash it with ethyl

alcohol and dry in a desiccator.
