IMPROMPTU
An impromptu speech is given with little or no preparation, yet almost
always with some advance knowledge on the topic. It is when you’re asked
to speak in public without prior notice.
There are 5 W’s – who, what, where, when, and why; Where we are able
to organize out thoughts in an easy-to-follow way.
Examples:
Presidential Debate
EXTEMPORANEOUS
This Extemporaneous speech is a well-prepared speech that relies on
research, clear organization, and practiced delivery. It is delivered with the
help of short notes and a clear outline.
The use of voice, movement, expression, and confidence are factors
into the judge’s evaluation.
Examples:
An actor practicing his/her lines before the performance.
MANUSCRIPT
This is when a speaker reads a pre-written speech word by word to an
audience. The speaker makes the entire speech by referring to the printed
document, or as seen on the teleprompter. It is basically an easy method of
oral communication.
Examples:
A speech given by a Congressman on a legislative bill under consideration.
● A report read out by a Chief Engineer at an Annual General Meeting.
MEMORIZED
A memorized speech is also fully prepared in advance and one in which
the speaker does not use any notes. In the case of an occasion speech like a
quick toast, a brief dedication, or a short eulogy, word-for-word
memorization might make sense
Examples:
Poetry contest
Lectures/ Conferences
● Spelling competitions
