Introduction
History of Oral Communication and the spoken word go to the times
beyond Aristotle, Cicero and other Greek and Roman philosophers.
In Indian context, Oral Communication has been the base formation
for the great Epics: Ramayan and Mahabharat.
Throughout each day, in personal or professional life, we orally
communicate with customers, colleagues, associates, supervisors.
Strategy of Oral Presentation: To Reflect
Favorably upon YOU.
Steps of Preparing Effective Oral
Presentations

1. Determine the Purpose
We communicate to produce a result. We wish something to occur as a
result of our words.
• To inform or instruct
• To persuade
• To entertain
2. Analyze the Audience and Occasion
As in writing, a knowledge of audience is significant for communicating
effectively.
3. Select the main ideas of the message
Selecting a theme or a main idea is to be done very initially. Gathering
additional information in support of the core ideas will help in creating
a sense or organized chaos.
Later, the same chaotic information will be formed to create complete,
thematic messages.
4. Research your topic
As an additional preparation, collect facts, data, information based on
solid research.
A well researched speaker will create a deeper, more lasting impact on
the minds of the listener.
New facts, new views, and new perspectives will enlarge and enhance
the horizon of the speaker.
5. Organize the data and Write the Draft
• An introduction
• A body/discussion
• A conclusion or summary
The PAL Model for organizing and writing the draft.
INTRODUCTION
• Porch: Opening Remarks, a preface, a preamble, a greeting.
• Aim: Purpose, WHY of the whole discussion, clear intent.
• Layout: Agenda, ‘divisio’ of the remarks, precise points to be covered
for the talk.
BODY/TEXT/DISCUSSION
• The body is the heart of the talk.
• There is support and final purpose of your presentation.
Summary/Conclusion
• Review or summarize what has been said, to draw inferences and
concluding remarks from the data.
6. Create Visual Aids
Understanding in priority if a visual aid is required or not. To include an
overhead of a visual aid in all oral presentations would be an odd
fallout from the necessity.
The question in discussion here is: ‘ would a visual aid add to the
understanding and support of the oral speech’
7. Rehearse the talk
Two purposes underlie rehearsals:
• More ease and comfort with the material.
• Can have the freedom of revising as and when necessary.
• While rehearsing, the following needs to be remembered:
i) Always imagine the audience in front of you.
ii) Use transitional phrases and sentences to ease the audience.
iii) Take each main point one at a time.
iv) Include visual aid as and when needed.
v) Anticipate questions from the audience.
vi) Be very time conscious.
Ways of Delivering Oral Presentations
Extemporaneous
Reading
Memorization
Impromptu Delivery
1. Extemporaneous: Speaking at the given opportunity with only a
small checklist to refer to.
• Preferred by seasoned speakers because this method emphasizes
more on eye contact, hand movement and relatedness with the
audience.
2. Reading: Most used approach for speakers who do not want to make
mistakes while reading.
3. Memorization: Few speakers have the art to memorize an entire
speech. In case of time taken in between the speech to remember or
move the memory, there is sure downfall of impression of the speech
and the speaker.
4. Impromptu: When speakers are called upon at the last moment to
offer comments.
