Fraternity and Sorority

Life Assessment
Daisy Lozano, Kayce Fuentes, Raymundo Enriquez, Yenifer
Mora
Context & Purpose
• The departmental characteristics of Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) is to
encourage fraternities and sororities to provide their members with experiences
that lead to personal and professional growth, development, and education.
• The purpose of this assessment to create and develop exit survey instruments to
collect data on students who disaffiliated in order to gain information about the
experiences of former fraternity and sorority members. The assessment will
address the following areas: process of disaffiliating, experience in
fraternity/sorority, and reasons for leaving.
Population

• In general, our population is students who are

members of fraternity and sorority life. Within
that population, we specifically are targeting
students who have chosen to disaffiliate from
their Fraternities and Sororities.

Survey preparation, Survey distribution Continued use of exit
interview protocol (piloted)  survey to gather
development  Interviews (not piloted)  historical data and
Goal to gather both review trends
quantitative and
qualitative data
Quantitative data
• Created a survey with various questions that answered
• Experience in Greek life
• “Please read each statement and select the corresponding agree or disagree option that
best describes your situation as it relates to your experience with fraternity and sorority
life at NIU?”
• “On a scale of not at all to severe, please indicate how the areas listed below negatively
impacted you during your time in fraternity and sorority life, if at all. The scale is
defined below”
• Hazing allegations
• Did you leave for hazing reasons? Hazing is defined as "any activity expected of
someone joining or participating in a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses, or
endangers them, regardless of a person’s willingness to participate" (stophazing.org,
2021).
• Did you report hazing to anyone in your chapter or to the office of Fraternity and
Sorority Life?
• We did not get a chance to conduct interview but created
a detailed guide in ways that it can be conducted
• 1 student did opt into the interview process
• Interview questions included three topics:
•  Experience in Sorority/Fraternity
Qualitative • How did you come to your decision to join fraternity/sorority?
• What was your experience like during the recruitment and
Data initiation process?
• Decision-Making Process to Disaffiliate
Protocols • What lead to your decision to start the disaffiliation process?
• a. What events led up to your disaffiliation?
•  b. Were those events out of your control?

•  Experience in the Process to Disaffiliate

• Did you feel supported during the process? If not, why not? If
so, how?
• What recommendations would you make regarding the

Demographics
Q- Please rank the top three reasons for
leaving membership based on what
impacted your disaffi liation experience
the most to the least. You do not have to
rank all reasons if they did not impact
your decision. Drag and drop items to
the right box to rank.

***Other category was a write in

used by two respondents

• "not fun, like most schools

with Greek Life
• "I didn't feel included"
Notable Quotes
In response to "why did you rank your #1"

• "chapter on a Sunday at 10pm... just to name one"

• This respondent indicated they experienced sleep deprivation
• "I could not afford it any longer"
• "I was broke"
• "I didn't feel like the price of being in a sorority was worth it, for what I was getting out of it."
• "I felt like as a member of my organization, I was not taken seriously, as well as I often felt
pressured to participate in activities I did not want to"
• "I didn't feel welcome and at some points I felt left out."
Q21 - Please read each
statement and select the
corresponding agree or disagree
option that best describes your
situation as it relates to your
experience with fraternity and
sorority life at NIU?

• 2/5 somewhat disagreed

that their chapter never
made them do things that
were against their morals
or values
• 5/5 stated that if given the
chance they would not
rejoin a fraternity or
sorority
• 3/5  somewhat disagreed
that they felt supported by
their chapter in their
personal life
Two of the incomplete surveys did not
make it past the consent question (Would
you like to answer questions regarding
your Greek Life experience?)

Consideration One respondent stopped after answering

s and Revision no to the hazing indicator question

Another respondent stopped right before

the demographics section
Recommendations
• Preliminary results lead us to believe....
1. There should be a universal exit process "off boarding" for all chapters
with disaffiliating members.
2. Chapters should engage in programming that aims at creating a sense of
belonging
3. Information on scholarships or financial aid applicable to Greek Life
should be made available to members experiencing financial hardship
• A big thanks to the Office of Fraternity and
Sorority Life, Dr. Kortegast, and
Questions?  our cohort...couldn't have done it without
your help!
