OCCUPATION
• Costa Rica is a very literate country.
• 11.97 percent of the employees in Costa Rica were active in
the agricultural sector, 18.8 percent in industry and 69.22
percent in the services sector.
• The service industry in Costa Rica includes activities such as  
• Tourism: Tourism makes up 8.2% percent of Costa Rica’s GDP. In
2018, the tourism sector generated 211,000 direct jobs, which is
8.8% of employment in the country. Costa Rica’s tourism
industry is essential to the country’s economic growth and
development.
• Transportation  
• Services provided to companies, hotels, and financial and
insurance intermediation, among others.

Population
• It has a population of around five million in a land area of
51,060 km2. An estimated 333,980 people live in the capital and
largest city, San José, with around two million people in the
surrounding metropolitan area.
• Nearly four-fifths of Costa Rica’s population is of European
descent, and, as a result, Costa Rica has the largest percentage
of people of Spanish descent in Central America.
• Slightly less than three-fourths of Costa Ricans are Roman
Catholics, which is their official religion

Major Festivals
• Catholicism is the official religion of Costa Rica and is the only state
on the American continent which has established Catholicism as its
state religion. Every year for Christmas, millions of spectators gather
in San Jose’s Paseo Colon to enjoy the magical Lights Festival.

• Festivals and cultural events reflect the nations various cultures of


the Costa Rican population. From cowboy parades in Palmares to the
carnival rides and bullfighting in Zapote. There’s also a
Caribbean style carnival in Limon.

• Costa Rica Music Festivals feature live concerts, yoga, and beach
activities, music festivals in the nation cover a wide variety of genres
and cultures.

• Names: Fiestas Palmares, Fiestas Zapote, Fiesta de Los Diablillos,


Limon Carnaval , The International Festival of Arts, Envision Festival,
Festival Imperial, Life in Color, etc.
Food
• The three most famous dishes of the country are Casado,
Gallo Pinto and Arroz con Pollo. Costa Rica is popular for its
tropical fruits and fresh authentic coffee.

• Costa Rican food is tasty rather than spicy. The national dish


Gallo Pinto, a dish of black beans and rice with onions and
cilantro. It is served for breakfast, with eggs, tortillas and sour
cream.

• Pinto and beans are a staple of Costa Rica and common


denominator among different culinary tastes in different
regions of the country.

• Tamales is the traditional dish served during Christmas.


It includes rice, beans and potatoes (or meat)
served on banana leaf.

• Happiest Country in the world (2012) – Happy Planet Index –
Funds that would have been spent on defence/army
(abolished in 1949) are invested in education, healthcare and
pensions.
• High life expectancy – 80 years on an average
• National Anthem plays on the radio every morning
• Over 200 volcanic formations – traced back over 65 million
years. Although, only 100 of them show signs of some
activity and 5 can be classified as active.
• Over 500000 species of wildlife – making it the most
biodiverse country in the world.
