Unit, dimension and their conversion with special reference to SI system
 A dimension is a measure of a physical variable while a unit is a way to assign a
number or measurement to that dimension.
 Example of unit is kg, m, sec, etc
 there are three unit system in use today
1.the international System of units
2.the English engineering System of units
3.the British gravitational System of units
 the latter two are similar and not so much used

Primary dimension and units
 sometimes called basic dimension
 independent or fundamental dimension from which other dimensions can
be obtained
 In total there are 7 primary dimension
 the primary dimension are mass, length, time, temperature, electric current,
amount of light it and amount of matter
 for must mechanical and thermal science analyses however only the four
first four of these are required the other will not be of concern to most
mechanical engineering analyses

9841404217 / 9801004217 https://nmspl.org.np/loksewa-test
The SI unit of different dimensions are mentioned below
Primary Dimension SI unit

Mass Kg (Kilogram)

Length M (Metre)

Time S (Second)

Temperature K (Kelvin)

Electric current A (Ampere)

Amount of light (luminous intensity) C (Candela)

Amount of matter Mol (Mole)

Drafting techniques and method in common practice
Different type of lines and effect
 Line is made by joining at least two points
 vertical line, horizontal line and inclined line
 thick and thin line
 in engineering drawing the detail of various object are drawn by different types
of lines
 Each line has a definite purpose and convey different information
 various type of line used in general engineering drawing are explained below

Nikhil Multi Services (P) Ltd ,Macchaokhari, Balaju , Kathmandu 01-6221823

9841404217 / 9801004217 https://nmspl.org.np/loksewa-test
Centre Line
 Centre lines are drawn to indicate the axis of cylindrical, conical or spherical
objects of detail and also to show the centres of circles and arcs
 they are thin long chain lines composed of alternately long and short dashes
approximately 1 mm apart.
 the longer dashes are about 6 to 8 times the shorter dashes which are about 1.5
mm long.
 Centre lines should extent for a short distance beyond the outline to which they
refer for the purpose of dimensioning or to correlate the views they may be
extended or required.

9841404217 / 9801004217 https://nmspl.org.np/loksewa-test
Construction line
 the lines are drawn for constructing figures
 these lines do not appear in finished drawing
 these are continuous thin light lines
Cutting plane line
 the location of cutting plane is shown by this type of line
 It is a long , thin, chain line and thick at ends only

9841404217 / 9801004217 https://nmspl.org.np/loksewa-test
Dimension lines
1. These lines are continuous thin lines
2. they are terminated at the outer end by pointed arrow head touching the
extension lines
3. the length of the arrow head is about 3 times its width.
Extension or projection lines
4. continuous thin lines
5. these lines extend about 3 mm beyond the dimension lines

9841404217 / 9801004217 https://nmspl.org.np/loksewa-test
Hatching lines
1. these lines are drawn to make this section evident
2. they are continuous thin lines
3. they are drawn generally at an angle of 45 degree to the main line of the section
Hidden line
4. hidden edges and surface are shown by hidden lines
5. they are also also called dotted line
6. they are of medium thickness
7. made up of short dashes of approximately 2 mm is placed at equal distance of
about 1 mm
8. when a hidden lines intersect another hidden lines or an outline their point of
intersection should be clearly shown.

Horizontal lines
1. a horizontal line is one which runs from left to right or right to left across the page
2. it comes from the word horizon in the sense that horizontal lines are parallel to the
horizon
3. has zero slope value
4. all points on horizontal line at the same y-coordinate
5. Horizontal lines are drawn along the top edge of the drafting straight edge like T-
square, parallel bar or drafting machine blade
6. A right handed person draws horizontal lines from left to right all left and it was
Android horizontal lines right to left

9841404217 / 9801004217 https://nmspl.org.np/loksewa-test
Out line
1. are drawn to represent visible lines and surface boundaries of objects
are called outline for principal line
2. they are continuous thick lines it is also known as visible line
Short break lines
3. these are drawn free hand and are used to show a start break or
irregular boundary
4. are continuous, thin and wavy

9841404217 / 9801004217 https://nmspl.org.np/loksewa-test
Vertical line
1. A vertical line is one that goes straight up and down
2. parallel to the y axis of the co-ordinate plane
3. has no slope
4. all points on the line will have the same X co-ordinate
5. vertical lines are drawn upward along the vertical edge of a triangle
whose adjacent leg is supported by the drafting straight edges
Inclined line
6. the line having deviating in direction from the horizontal or vertical

9841404217 / 9801004217 https://nmspl.org.np/loksewa-test
Leader lines
1. leader line is drawn to connect a note with the feature to which it applies
2. it is a continuous thin line
3. the leader line is generally drawn at any convenient angle usually 30
degree 45 degree and 60 degree but not of less than 30 degree
long brake lines
4. these lines are thin ruled lines with short zigzag within them
5. they are drawn to show breaks
