3 India’s EV Projections
Rihand Super Thermal Power Project
Pinnacle

“ACCORDING TO NITI AAYOG INDIA WILL HAVE AROUND 50-60 MILLION EV

VEHICLES IN 2030”
4 Impact of EV on Distribution Grid
Rihand Super Thermal Power Project

o Energy required to charge a battery = 18KWh/100 Km

o Indian average run per year = 14600 Km
Pinnacle

o For 60 million cars energy required is = 160 TWh

o Re power projections in 2030 = 440 GW

“To cater this power during day time distribution grid has to spend
huge amount of money on infrastructure”
4 Benefits of EV
Rihand Super Thermal Power Project

 40% Saving in the cost of new

infrastructure
Pinnacle

 Lower the cost of running the EV

 Save the peak load requirement due to
the EV
 Lower the coincidence factor

4 WHY Hydrogen ?
Rihand Super Thermal Power Project

 Pollution free
 Can be used with conventional IC engines e.g. H-CNG in Delhi
Pinnacle

 Transition to Hydrogen as fuel is smooth as per existing infrastructure

 High Calorific value (4 X petrol & Diesel)
 Energy storage medium
 Much safer than petrol and diesel
 Low cost (equivalent to conventional fuel) for NTPC

Pinnacle The Economy : EV vs FCV
4 Hydrogen Vehicle vs Electric Vehicle
 HFC Vehicles are Lighter than EV.
Rihand Super Thermal Power Project

 Hydrogen Filling Time is very less where Charging time of EV is High.

Pinnacle

 HFC Life Cycle is higher as Compare to EV

 Vehicle Range is practically very High in HFC Vehicle as compare to EV

 No vehicle size limit in HFC type where only small vehicles are developed
in EV.
19
of  Conventional IC can be used with Hydrogen fuel

4 Hydrogen : New Horizon for NTPC
Rihand Super Thermal Power Project

1. Hydrogen generation systems are available in all NTPC coal based plant

2. Technology and safety aspects are well known

Pinnacle

3. Hydrogen may be used for energy storage . Energy may be stored during off

peak period [Link].

4. NTPC Plant located near major cities. Transportation cost may be reduced .

5. Low cost of electricity and DM water and hence low cost of H2 .

6. Capacity addition possible with available infrastructure.

26
4 The Proposals
Rihand Super Thermal Power Project

1. NTPC should start commercial sale of hydrogen

2. Based on Market requirements Capacity may be increased

Pinnacle

3. Based on capacity, Hydrogen may be used as energy storage for NTPC

4. Joint Venture with automobile Manufacturers

5. Hydrogen Filling Station owned & Operated by NTPC

27
4 Conclusion
Rihand Super Thermal Power Project

1. EVs are popular with some major limitations like charging time, size of battery,
cost of vehicle etc…
2. H-CNG is cleaner. It may be used in Existing vehicles with Internal Combustion
Pinnacle

Engines.
3. Market price of hydrogen is almost 2 times higher than the in-house production.
4. Every fuel is unsafe if it not handled properly.
5. Hydrogen is a fuel of future and NTPC is having infrastructure for its
production
