Introduction

Neck pain is pain that starts in the neck

and can be associated with radiating
pain down one or both of the arms.
Neck pain can come from a number of
disorders or diseases that involve any of
the tissues in the neck, nerves, bones,
joints, ligaments or muscles.

The neck region of the spinal column, the cervical spine, consists of

seven bones (C1-C7 vertebrae), which are separated from one another
by intervertebral discs. These discs allow the spine to move freely and
act as shock absorbers during activity.
Symptoms

.
.

Pain in the arm

Numbness or weakness in the arm or
forearm
Tingling in the fingers or hand
Difficulty with balance and walking
Weakness in the arms or legs
Causes
Neck pain or stiffness can happen for a variety of reasons.
Muscle tension and strain
This is usually from activities and behaviors such as:
 poor posture
 working at a desk for too long without changing position
 sleeping with your neck in a bad position
 jerking your neck during exercise
Injury

 The neck is particularly in falls, car accidents, and sports, where

the muscles and ligaments of the neck are forced to move outside
of their normal range.

 If the neck bones (cervical vertebrae) are fractured, the spinal

cord may also be damaged. Neck injury from sudden jerking of
the head is commonly called whiplash.
Other causes

 Disc degeneration
 Disc bulging
 Cervical spondylitis
 spondylolisthesis
Diagnosis

 X-ray
 CT scan ( Computed tomography )
 MRI scan ( Magnetic resonance imaging )
Physiotherapy Management

Goals of Physical Therapy for Neck Pain

Physical therapy for neck pain typically includes the
following goals:

 Reduce pain and stiffness

 Improve head and neck range of motion
 Develop dynamic strengthening of the neck and its supporting
musculature
Pain management

EIectrotherapy:
 IFT (Interferential Therapy )
 TENS (Transcutaneous electrical nerve
stimulation)
 ULTRA SOUND THERAPY
 TRACTION
Exercise therapy

Neck Tilt:
  From the sitting position, tilt your head down so your chin touches your
chest. Hold this position for 5 seconds. Return to the starting position and
repeat. Do this five times.

Side-to-Side Neck Tilt.

 From the same starting position, tilt you neck toward one shoulder, leading
with your ear. Hold for 5 seconds and then return to the starting position. Do
this five times on each side.
