WHAT IS PATRIOTISM?
Patriotism is made up of four main components:
• A special love for one’s own country.
• The sentiment to define oneself with one’s
country.
• Being concerned with the welfare of one’s
country.
• To make sacrifices to the favor of one’s
country.

Researches that have been done on patriotism reveal

differing definitions such as love for national
symbols, specific beliefs as to the superiority of a
country, a very important component for the
strengthening of the civil bonds of a mature
community of people and the national loyalty
sentiment
If the Latin roots of the
word “patriotism” are
examined, it may be
characterized as loyalty
to the ruler. Authors
have differing opinions
relating to the definition,
content and distinctive
properties of patriotism.
Patriotism, in the most
general sense, is defined
as the loyalty of the
members of the group to
their own group and the
land on which they live
Patriotism is not something to

OF IDEAL
Patriotism is not a discipline that
ought to be followed or a duty
PATRIOTISM
that has to be done, it is devotion
that stirs every heart. Patriotism
is a bridge connecting a citizen
to his motherland. If freedom is
the oxygen for the soul, then
patriotism is the molecule that
make that oxygen.

“For me patriotism is the same as humanity. I am patriotic because I am

human and humane. It is not exclusive. I will not hurt England or
Germany to serve India….My patriotism is inclusive and admits of no
enmity or ill-will”’

Regimes have merged the fervor of

nationalism with the notions of
superiority, especially when it comes to
ethnicity and religion. In such contexts,
“patriots” can become those who
happened to agree with you or look like
you, and “traitors”, those who do not.

Both nationalism and patriotism indicate

the relationship of the individual with his
community of people, but both are two
sides of the same coin and there is a thin
line demarcating both the ideologies
Patriotism generally has a positive connotation. It’s
used for various positive sentiments, attitudes, and
actions involving loving one’s own country and

serving the common interests of all of its people.
NATIONALISM
Nationalism generally has a negative connotation.

It’s used for political ideologies and movements
that are more extreme and emphasis on WORLD

This form of nationalism is what happens

when patriotism gets out of hand and morphs
into something more exclusionary,
isolationist, and … well, chauvinist.

FUTURE OF PATRIOTISM
Borders do not define people. The geography in
which they are living does not matter, all the
people should possess some kind of rights. This
additionally means that people are treated
equally and efforts are made to develop the
planet entirely for everyone.” “A True citizen is
the one who is proud of his country and wishes
for advancement of his country.

We need a different way of thinking about belonging and about inclusion, and a different way
of talking about patriotism and the relationship between citizenship and nationality. These are
very urgent questions. We should reimagine our view towards patriotism that tackles our
social inequities and allows us to reflect critically on our historical responsibilities as a nation.
We cannot be content with it in the initial form in which it is given. We must work upon it,
refine it and elevate it.
