Man-made Disasters

Man-made disasters have an element of human intent,

negligence, or error involving a failure of a man-made system, as
opposed to natural disasters resulting from natural hazards. Such
man-made disasters are crime, arson, civil disorder, terrorism,
war, biological/chemical threat, cyber-attacks, etc.
Technological/ Industrial Disasters
A technological disaster is an event caused by a malfunction of a
technological structure and/or some human error in controlling
or handling the technology. Technological disasters can be
considered a man-made disaster meaning there is an
"identifiable cause" characteristic.

Examples of technological hazards include industrial pollution,

nuclear radiation, toxic wastes, dam failures, transport accidents,
factory explosions, fires, and chemical spills.
Terrorism
Terrorism is the use of force or violence against persons or
property in violation of the criminal laws of the United States
for purposes of intimidation, coercion, or ransom. Terrorists
often use threats to create fear among the public to try to
convince citizens that their government is powerless to
prevent terrorism and to get immediate publicity for their
causes.
Complex Humanitarian Emergency
Complex Humanitarian Emergency (CHE), type of disaster event that is
caused by and results in a complicated set of social, medical, and often
political circumstances, usually leading to great human suffering and
death and requiring external assistance and aid.

Complex emergencies, which often have a combination of natural and

man-made elements, and different causes of vulnerability and a
combination of factors leads to a humanitarian crisis. Examples include
food insecurity, armed conflicts, and displaced populations.
