THE

GEOCENTRIC
MODELS
In astronomy,the geocentric
model (also known as
geocentrism, or the Ptolemaic
system) is a superseded
description of the universe with
Earth at the center.Under the
geocentric model, the Sun,
Moon,stars and planets all
orbited Earth.
Pythagorean universe is
the first known non-
geocentric model of the
universe.
its purpose is: all is
number, that number is
the origin of the universe.
 In the Pythagorean
universe all planets
revolve a central fire
uniformly.
The Earth is a spherical
ball.
Pythagorean Universe
which posited a system
whereby the Earth
together with the other
planets was arrayed
around a mythological
"central fire"
PLATO’S “SAVING
THE
APPEARANCES”

The Greek Philosopher

and teacher Plato adopted
the Pythagorean view of the
motion of the heavenly
bodies as combination as
circular motion about Earth.

He assumed that all

motions in the universe are
perfectly circular and that
all heavenly bodies are
ethereal or perfect.
Most of the time, planets
move from west to east as
predicted.

But occasionally, they back

track for a while;, that is,
move west ward before
resuming their east ward
motion.

The followers and

students of Plato were
called upon to explain the
retrograde motion of the
planets.
