CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT
This course has been planned as a compulsory course for
undergraduates.

It starts with the introduction of the special nature of civil engineering

project.

The course revolves around the various activities encountered during the
life cycle of a civil engineering project.

It introduces the basic learning requirements for the civil engineer

project manager and makes the appreciation for the qualitative nature of
the construction project management.

The philosophy of the course is more on system approach contrary to

majority of mechanics based subject.
CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT
Major areas of the course you will learn are;

 General overview of civil engineering projects

 Procurement and contract management

 Project planning and its implementation

 Quality and Safety in construction management

CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT
• Most of the topics are introductory in nature.
• By going through this course, a student will be able
to understand –

 What does a Civil Engineer do?

 What are the nature of job for the construction
engineers?
 If a person wants to develop his career in the
construction industry, what are the various subjects a
student is required to learn?
CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT
 The art of construction has slowly
developed into a science over the
centuries.

 Civilengineers are involved from Government Staff Quarters

conception to physical realization of
the project.

 We shall first enumerate the different

civil engineering projects.
Residential Buildings

1. Residential Buildings, town

planning
CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT
2. Other buildings –

 Academic building such as institutes,

university and schools,
hospitals,  Mosque, government and
private offices, commercial complexes, Mosque
recreational building  such as
auditorium, cinema hall, theaters,
stores, warehouse, light manufacturing University
plants.

 Depending upon the level of

development of a country, these
construction projects constitute large
share. Developed countries have more Hospital
facilities in this area than under
developed countries.
CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT
3. Transportation systems:

 Bridges and flyover, roads,

railways, airport, urban mass Metro Bus Route Lahore
transit system such as mono
railway, town planning, port
and  harbor, tunnel.

Azadi Flyover Lahore

 These are basic infrastructural
projects. Developing countries
are spending major of its
budget on these projects.

4: Hydraulic structures
 Dam, barrage, canal,
hydroelectric power plant, Dam
tunnel, embankment, flood
control system.

 For a country whose

economy is dependent on Barrage

agriculture, these are major

infrastructural projects.

5: Fossil fuel and Nuclear

power plants:

 Energy is vital for

survival.

 The generation of Thermal Power Plants

electricity is carried out
from coal, petroleum and
nuclear fuel.

6: Offshore Structures:

 These are huge steel and

concrete structure in sea,
used usually for
petroleum extraction.

Tension Legged Platform

CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT
7: Space based and defense structure::

 Army Cantonment, missile launch pad,

bunkers,
Missile Launch Pad
 Defense is an important part of any
country.

 These are huge civil engineering

construction projects related to defense. Army Cantonment

 Technology involved is very

sophisticated.
CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT

8: Industrial Structures
 Petrochemical refineries,
small and large scale
manufacturing plants,
silos, bunker, mine
developments.

 These are the backbone of

modern growth of a
country. Refinery
CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT

9: Communication System:

 Transmission line tower,

communication network, TV Tower
TV Tower.

 These structures are

lifeline for present
activities.
Transmission Line
CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT
10: Water and waste project;

 Water treatment plant,

 Water distribution system - pipe, water

tanks,
Water Treatment
 Sewage and storm water collection system,

 Sewage treatment plants,

 Sewage disposal system,

Waste Water Treatment
 These structures are important for
environment friendly living and healthy life.
CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT

10: Special Projects:

 High altitude construction

project, marine
exploration project.

 These are used for

scientific exploration,
strategic importance. High Altitude Construction

Types of Structures
Plates
Membranes

Shells
The
characteristic
of a great
engineer is
creativity, not
skill with
math and
science.

 A space elevator is a proposed FUTURE
structure designed to transport
material to space.
STRUCTURES

 The concept most often refers

to a structure that reaches from
the surface of the Earth on or
near the Equator to
geostationary orbit (GSO).

 Current materials technology

does not permit these kinds of
structures to be practical,
although advanced carbon
nano tubes could, in principle,
have the strength necessary to
permit this. Space Elevator
