People
The passing on certain physical and mental
characteristics from parents to offspring is called
heredity.
HEREDITY- it is a specific traits
that are carried from one
generation to another.
PEOPLE
=Why do you look like your
parents?
=What did you inherit from your
father?
=How about from your mother?
Children may look like their parents.
Most traits that parents pass on their
children are physical characteristics
like height, body structure, the shape
and color of the eyes, the shape of the
nose, and lips as well as the color of
the hair and skin.
Children may also inherit mental
abilities from their parents. This
includes exceptional mathematical
skills and talents in painting and
drawing. However, if the children are
not given proper training, their
inherited skills will not fully develop.
Do These!
Observe yourself in the mirror. Identify the physical
characteristics that you have inherited from your
parents by checking the correct column.
Characteristics Father Mother

1. Color of the eye

2. Shape of the nose

3. Color of the skin

4. Color and kind of hair

5. Hair

Animals
Observe the young animals in the picture. Are
their body parts similar to their parents?
Physical Characteristics of animals can be passed
on their offspring. Their young can inherit the color
and pattern of their body covering, the shape and
color of their eyes, and other body features.

Example:
1. A brown pig gives birth to five brown piglets.
Behavioral Characteristics of animals can also be
passed on their offspring. This includes the way
they move, hunt for food, and protect themselves.
Survival skills can also be inherited.

Example:
1. A butterfly follows the scent of a flower.
Animals can pass on their
physical characteristics,
behavioral traits, and even
some illnesses to their
offspring.

Plants
Observe a growing plant. Does it look like its
parent? A mango tree will not have an offspring
which is not a mango tree. A coconut tree cannot
have a guava tree for an offspring.
Young plants look like their parents. Plants
propagate to produce new offspring. Most plants
propagate through their:
=seeds
=spores
=stems
=leaves
=roots
The body parts of mature plants, like the shape
of their roots; color and texture of their stem;
color and shape of their leaves; color and shape
of their flowers; and texture, color, and shape of
their fruit, are passed on their offspring.
SCIENCE FACT
Bamboo is the world’s
tallest grass, sometimes
growing up to a height
of 40 meters or higher.
The body parts of mature
plants like roots, stem,
leaves, flowers, and roots
are similar to offspring.
