5S Techniques
WHAT IS 5S ?

• 5S is a structured program to implement workplace


organization and structure.
• 5S represent five disciplines for maintain a visual
workplace.

• 5S improves work efficiency.
• 5S and safety go in hand-in-hand.
• 5S leads to higher customer satisfaction and higher
productivity.
What Is Sort?
1.SORT
• The Sort step separates items in your workspace that you know you
need from those that you do not need or may not need by moving
the latter to a “red tag” holding area.

How Do You Implement Sort?


• Separate necessary items (e.g., tools, parts,
and materials) from unnecessary items. We
recommend sorting items into four
categories:
i. Items needed in this work area.
ii. Items needed in another work area.
iii. Items you may need.
iv. Items you do not need.

What Are Some Examples of Sort?

• Discard broken or old parts using 5S red tags.


• Responsibly recycle materials and papers. Separate everyday
tools from special-case tools.
• Avoid overfilling your workspace with excess materials.
• Create an overflow area outside of workspace for duplicate
materials, tools, and parts.
2.SET IN ORDER
What Is Set in Order?
• The Set in order step thoroughly organizes the items that remain
after sorting, such that frequently used items are easy to access
and every item has a clear and easy-to-find home.

How Do You Implement Set in Order?


• After you’ve sorted items, it’s time to decide
how you want to organize them. We recommend
the following methodology
i. Provide easy access to frequently used items.
ii. Group the items.
iii. Visualize items.
iv. Use containers.
v. Use labellers.

What Are Some Examples of Set in Order?
• Give every item a distinct “home.”
• Use color as a way of organizing
and creating meaning.
• Separate everyday tools from
special-case tools.
• Dedicate a surface or area entirely
to shadow boxes and tool storage.
• Dedicate another surface or area
entirely to working.
