DEFINITION OF SENTENCE
Sentence is a group of words that gives a complete
meaning and ends with a full stop(.).

According to the rules of grammar,


• “A sentence should be in proper sequence
to reveal a complete meaning. A sentence
can have noun, verb, adjectives, subject,
object and article in the correct sequence.”
TYPES OF SENTENCE
There are many types of sentences in English language.
The purpose of a sentence is to convey meaning to the
other person. So based on this the sentence is of two
types

 Clause -“It is a meaningful combination of words, as it can
alone express a complete thought.” in other words, clause
is a related group of words that contains a subject as well as
a verb.
 Types of clauses
• It is also known as MAIN CLAUSE
• Which gives a complete meaning in a single sentence
Independent
clause • Example: I bought a house

• It is also known as SUBORDINATE CLAUSE


• Which is used with an interconnected conjunction
Dependent • Example: She failed many times yet she is not

Conjunction
Conjunction is the joining together of elements
It is a word that connects sentences, phrases or clauses

For Compound Sentence:


• are, and, for, nor, but, so, yet, or, etc.

For Complex Sentence:


• Although, because, since, unless, when, or
relative nouns such as, who, that, which, etc.

Compound
STRUCTURAL TYPES
• A sentence which has complete meaning.
Simple
• Example: She sings a song.
• A sentence which has at least two main clauses connected
Compoun by a coordinating conjunction.
d • Example: I wrote him a letter but he didn’t reply me.

• A sentence which consists of one main clause and one


Complex subordinate clause.
• Example: It is quite hot today although it was raining.

Complex- • Contains two main clauses and one or more subordinate


clauses.
Compoun • Example: I waited for him but he didn’t come which

FUNCTIONAL TYPES
• The sentence that ends with a complete meaning(.)
Declarative • Example: I drive a car.

• A sentence is either a command or request:


Imperative • Example: Turn off the light.(Command)
Give me some food(request).

Interrogativ • A sentence that ends with a question mark(?):

Exclamator • Sentence that express an emotion or feeling and ends


with and exclamatory mark(!)
