 NSAIDs

• Defination:-
Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are a
heterogeneous group of drugs having weak or mild
analgesic effect with or without antipyretic and anti-
inflammatory actions
• Mechanism of action:-
 All NSAIDs are having similar type of action
 Block cyclooxygenase(COX) enzyme reversibly
(except aspirin) causing inhibition of synthesis
of prostaglandin
 Classification

(1)Agents with analgesic and marked anti-

inflammatory activity
a) Salicylic acid derivatives
eg. aspirin, sodium salicylate
b) Pyrazolone derivatives
eg. phenylbutazone
c) Oxicam derivatives
eg. meloxicam, piroxicam
d) Amino-nicotinic acid derivatives
eg. flunixin
(2)Agents with analgesic and mild to moderate
anti-inflammatory activity
a) Propionic acid derivatives
eg. carprofen, ketoprofen
b) Fenamates
eg. tolfenamic acid
c) Sulphonalinide derivatives
eg. nimesulide
(3)Agents with analgesic and poor anti-
inflammatory activity
a) Para-aminophenol derivatives
eg. paracetamol
b)Pyrazolone derivatives
eg. metamizole
  
Acetyl salicylic acid / Aspirin

• Class:- Salicylate
• Indication:- Pain, pyrexia and inflammation of
musculoskeletal origin
• Dosage:- Dog – 10 mg/kg PO, BID
• Precautions:-
Cats - highly susceptible to toxicity
At high concentration- cause irritation, bleeding
or ulceration of gastric mucosa
