Advertising consists of all the activities in
presenting to an audience a non-personal,
sponsor-identified, paid-for message about a
product, service, cause or an organisation.

The message which is presented or


disseminated is known as advertisement

NEWSPAPER ADVERTISING

Newspaper display advertising is a form


of newspaper advertisement - where the advertisement appears
alongside regular editorial content. Display ads are generally used
by businesses and corporations towards promotion of their goods
and services and are generally for larger budget clients.

These ads can span across multiple columns - and can even
cover full page, half page, quarter page or other custom
sizes. They are designed in high resolution coloured and
black/white formats providing higher visibility for the mass
audiences of newspapers.
DISPLAY ADS AND CLASSIFIED ADS

Display ads typically contain text, photographs, logos, maps, and other
informational items. In a newspaper, display advertising appears on the
same page as, or on the page adjacent to general editorial content.

Whereas , classified ads generally appear in distinct sections - based


on their ad category in a designated newspaper classified pullout. 
EXAMPLES
Display Ads:-retail/branding, public announcements, tender, public
notice, education admission notices, , special appointments,
supplements etc.

Classified Ads:-  personal/individual requirements such as selling


property, selling automobiles, or change of name
ADVANTAGES
 Newspapers reach every nook and corner, so the
advertisement coverage is high.
 They reach the public at a lower cost than any other
medium.
 It offers flexibility in the sense that the advertisement
campaign can be started and stopped quickly . Usually one
day notice is enough for this purpose.
DISADVANTAGES
 Illiterate people cannot understand newspaper
advertisements.
 The life of a Newspaper is very short. If the advertisement is
not seen on the day it appears in the newspaper, it goes to
waste.
 Only color advertisements are more effective, but they are
very limited and costly.
RADIO ADVERTISING
Advertisements are broadcast from the transmitting
stations at the service of All India Radio and FM
Radio and picked up by the receiving sets owned
by the public. Radio advertisements are normally
broadcast along with some popular music programs.

TYPES OF RADIO ADVERTISING


There are three types of radio advertising:-
LIVE READS
A live read is when the broadcaster on the show reads your
advertisement in real-time on the air. It involves making use of a
well-known and liked on-air personality who will entice people to
engage with the advertisement.
SPONSORSHIPS
Many radio stations implement sponsorships for certain
types of radio segments, such as traffic, weather, or sports
scores .  It will generally sound something like this: 'This
hour's weather updates are brought to you by nescafe’.
PRODUCED SPOT
A produced spot can either be a straight read of your
advertising message or a read that incorporates multiple
voices, sound effects or a jingle. A jingle is a short, catchy
song about your company.
ADVANTAGES
 You can target your advertising to a specific audience. Different
radio stations have different formats, from news/talk to oldies to
rock which helps you target teenagers, families, urban men etc.
 A 30-second ad on radio is often less expensive than a 30-
second TV ad and easier to produce
 Radio advertisements reach the illiterate people who cannot
read newspapers or magazines.
 DISADVANTAGES
 Detailed messages cannot be announced over the radio,
people may not remember it.
 It is non visual, thus the impact of illustrating the product is not
so profound.
 Sometimes the message is not understood properly as many
people tend to change the radio station or switch off the radio
when an ad comes up.
TELEVISION
ADVERTISING
 It is about relaying a specific social, political or
sales pitch in a limited amount of time, broadly
ranging in between few seconds to several minutes.
More expensive than other form of promotion, it is
produced and paid for by the organizations called
advertiser or marketer and streamed from a
television network. 
Advertising may take the form of a short commercial
or sponsored programmes.
TYPES OF TV ADVERTISING
There are broadly two types of advertising , namely Sponsored
programs and announcements.
Sponsored programs
It is a type of telecast where a story, play, a film is sponsored by the
advertiser who pays for the time. He takes advantage of this and
advertises his product or service.
Announcements
Announcement is a kind of telecast which is presented to the
audience between the sponsored programme and the station
break. Here, the advertiser pays only for the duration of
advertisement, as he is not paying for the sponsored period.
Majority of the advertisers go in for this type
ADVANTAGES
 It has the ability to make a deep impact. It successfully catches
the viewers’ attention and is an ideal medium to exhibit
products
  Like radio and newspapers, T.V. is a highly flexible and a
selective medium. It can be used locally, regionally and
nationally
 It is immensely popular and has a vast reach which benefits
the advertisers .
 DISADVANTAGES
 TV is a very costly medium and only the well established
companies can make use of it.
 There are too many commercials on the tv and as a result,it
reduces the effectiveness of their impact.
OUTDOOR ADVERTISING
When a business runs an advertising campaign that reaches
the prospects and potential consumers when they are outside
their home, then it is termed as outdoor advertising.
Outdoor advertising is of the following types:-

POSTER DISPLAYS- posters are fixed on walls of


buildings, bridges and other public places. They generally
have slogans or messages written on them in bold about the
product to grab the attention of people.
BILLBOARD DISPLAYS
Billboards are giant posters displayed in high traffic locations.
Billboard advertising is highly effective because it tends
to blend into its surroundings, making it less of a
distraction and something that naturally comes into a
person’s view
VEHICULAR DISPLAYS
 It is advertising placed in or on modes of public
transportation or in public transportation areas. Using this
method of advertising, ads can be placed anywhere from
on the sides of buses, trains and taxis, to inside subway
cars
ADVANTAGES
 It is a highly flexible medium and a low cost way to
advertise.
 It attracts quick attention from the public it is clearly
visible and located at strategic places.
 It creates a prolonged impression on people as posters and
billboards usually remain there for a few good days.
DISADVANTAGES
 They cant carry long messages as posters and hoardings are
read by people in a glance.
 It is not targeted advertising as it is meant to look at by
everyone outside their homes.
 Such advertising could become a reason for accidents as
people can get distracted by them.
FILM ADVERTISING
In this advertising, business concerns get a short
motion picture prepared and distribute it to cinema
houses for displaying it before the commencement of
the regular shows or during the period of intermission.
 However, this form of advertising must be
carefully used and film should be prepared
with a view to entertain the public
ADVANTAGES
 It offers mass publicity as a sizeable number of people
are present in the hall at one time
 It helps in selective advertising as the cinema audience
consists of all sections of society and there is
something for everyone in the advertisement
 It cuts the barriers of illiteracy and is able to get its
point across to everyone alike.
 DISADVANTAGES
 The advertisements are usually made on urban life
whereas cinema is very popular in the rural parts
 Advertisements can often get ignored when people are
busy talking
WINDOW DISPLAY
Window display advertising relates to systematic
arrangement of articles in a shop in such away
that they attract the attention of those who pass-
by. Articles in cartons, distinctive jar, bottles and
packages are displayed by the window
Window displays are very popular with retailers
as it helps them to inform customers about the
types of goods available with them.
ADVANTAGES
 It builds brand awareness. A unique display can make your
store stand out from the rest.
 It provides instant information to the potential customers as
they get a good idea of what your store is about.
 DISADVANTAGES
 It is expensive to design and maintain the articles that are
being displayed.
 It requires extra space in your shop/store.
 There is a risk of the articles of display getting ruined due to
environmental conditions
SPECIALITY ADVERTISING
Advertising specialties are those items inscribed with your
company name and logo that you typically give away.
Specialty advertising can be used on everything from pens
and calendars to caps, t-shirts, lip balm and thumb drives.
Ad specialties are a way to get your customers to promote
your company while taking advantage of the useful item
you give them
Since these articles are of daily use, they have a higher
chance of reminding the customers about the brand
These promotional products are distributed directly to the
potential customers which helps in selective advertsing
