AVOIDANCE OF
MEDICAL CARE
BECAUSE OF COVID-19
Group 3 - STEM B
INTRODUCTION
The pandemic started last December 2019, and ever since it started, surveys have shown
that 40% of Filipinos have delayed or avoided medical care. Since the pandemic, research
shows that hospital admissions for emergency cases such as stroke and heart attack have
declined. A variety of reasons include; lack of hospital beds and admissions, strict covid
protocols in their area, and lastly, the most common reason was fear of being diagnosed
with covid. This problem of medical avoidance is more prevalent than ever, but this was
already a thing back before the pandemic started. Research shows that individuals with
major health problems take about a year before they seek medical assistance. Because of
this, prolonged medical suffering, and increased risk are experienced.
PURPOSE
Our group aims to communicate to people that avoiding medical care would only worsen
their situation. What if they don’t go to hospitals to get check-ups for what they’re feeling,
it would be what kills them and not COVID. We want to show them studies that showed
people who avoid medical assistance in this time of the pandemic are experiencing
anxiety, and that the part of their brains for planning is messing up data for them to create
terrible scenarios in their heads.
DESCRIPTION AND SUPPORT
The first thing we would do is to research more about this topic. Once we have enough
data regarding this, we would be able to create pub mats, posters, and social media posts.
We thought about this because social media posts are so easy to access and share, thus, the
dissemination of information would be so easy. In the posts, we would tell that Covid is
indeed serious, but other medical issues are as serious as well, and whatever they’re
feeling right now is likely to be more damaging than COVID itself. Another thing we
would do is to create videos and upload them to streaming sites such as TikTok and
YouTube. By doing this, the posts and the information are more engaging, thus, more
convincing than ever. By making people more knowledgeable, they become less prone to
fear and more confident in going to hospitals.
DESCRIPTION AND SUPPORT
This is an easier and more efficient way of making them seek medical help because there
is no force applied, just manipulation of their psychology. Lastly, we would share
information with peers, in order to follow the concept of the domino effect wherein one
action would spark a continuous action for everyone. By informing friends, family, and
other people we can influence, we get to have more people who can convey the message
we are trying to spread. If each of us teaches one friend, our friend has also one friend she
could teach, and her friend would also have one friend to teach, thus, it is indeed a domino
effect. We chose this topic because most of us knew someone who died because of not
seeking medical help. Some of them died from a heart attack, brain tumors, and cancers,
simply because they were diagnosed too late because they avoided medical care.
