How many three-letter
combinations can be
formed?

Page 10
Your answer is correct!

The number of different arrangements

Can you express this
of 4 letters taken 3 at a time is
given to Permutation shown by the Permutation notation,
notation? P(4,3)

Following the formula, our solution

is:
P(4,3) = = 24 ways
There are 24 three-letter
arrangements

Page 11
But since our given
question is in combination,
the arrangement is not
important.
Looking at each column,
there are 6 arrangements
with the same letters and
each column is considered So, there are 4 possible
as one combination. combinations.

formed from n objects taken r at a time
is denoted by the following notations and
read as, the combination of n taken r at

1. Ten finalists are to be chosen from 30
contestants in a Math interschool competition. In
how many ways can the 10 finalists be proclaimed?

Page 14
EXAMPLE:
How many lines can be formed from 12 distinct points if
no three points are collinear?

Page 15
EXAMPLE:
A photography club is made up of 8 boys and 6 girls. A
committee of 7 has to be formed for the documentation of
the World Teachers’ Day program. In how many ways this
can be done if the committee consists of:

a. 4 boys and 3 girls?

b. b. at least 5 girls?
c. c. at most 2 girls?

Page 15
A. Since we have a condition that we need to follow, we
need to be aware of these conditions.

Page 16
B. In the problem a condition said that it must at "least
5 girls" but remember we only have 6 girls, and the
committee only has 7 members to the given.

Page 17
C. In at most 2 girls means that girls are less than or equal to 2. The
committee can consist of

Either of these ways can satisfy the condition, therefore, the number of
ways is the sum of those events. Thus,
₆C₂ • ₈C₅ + ₆C₁ • ₈C₆ + ₆C₀• ₈C₇
You may also write the combination notation as,
C(6,2) ● C(8,5) + C(6,1) ● C(8,6) + C(6,0) ● C(8,7)
