What is Joint Venture?
• Joint Venture refers to that kind of business which is
formed when two businesses combine together and
meet their different skill set to achieve a common
business objective.
• The joint venture is just like any other business-like
companies or partnership, the difference between it is
that joint venture is only owned by two different
persons or parties. It is just like a business agreement
in which both partners agree to share a profit in a
specific ratio of their ownership. The partners in the
business are also known as co-ventures. A joint
venture is generally formed to achieve a specific
project or a goal.
Uber X Volvo
• One of the best example for joint venture is
Taxi giant UBER and the heavy vehicle
manufacturer Volvo. The joint venture goal
was to produce driverless cars The ratio of
ownership is 50%-50%. The business worth
was $350 million as per the agreement in the
joint venture.
• The two companies have signed an
agreement to establish a joint project that
will develop new base vehicles that will be
able to incorporate the latest developments
in AD technologies, up to and including fully
autonomous driverless cars. The base
vehicles will be manufactured by Volvo Cars
and then purchased from Volvo by Uber.

• The Volvo-Uber project marks a significant step in
the automotive business, underlining the way in
which the global automotive industry is evolving in
response to the advent of new technologies. The
alliance marks the beginning of  what both
companies view as a longer-term industrial
partnership.
• Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of
Volvo Cars, said: “Volvo is a world leader in the
development of active safety and autonomous drive
technology and possesses an unrivalled safety
credibility. We are very proud to be the partner of
choice for Uber, one of the world’s leading
technology companies. This alliance places Volvo at
the heart of the current technological revolution in
the automotive industry.”

for Uber and Volvo
• The Volvo-Uber joint venture allows both
businesses to combine their resources with the
aim of capitalising on the strengths of each
other.
• Volvo will provide XC90 SUVs to Uber, which
in turn will install its autonomous driving
system that Uber is developing for use in its
ride-sharing service. Volvo will then use the
vehicles with Uber’s self-driving tech for its
own strategic purpose.
• The partnership covers hardware and software
developments aimed at addressing important
issues surrounding autonomous driving,
particularly safety and security.

Disadvantages for
Uber and Volvo
• Expensive – High-technology vehicles and
equipment are expensive. They prepare a large
amount of money for research and development as
well as in choosing the finest and most functional
materials needed such as the software, modified
vehicle parts, and sensors. Thus, the cost of having
Autonomous cars is initially higher. However, this
may lower down after 10 years giving way for the
average earner people to have one.
• Trust - Though it has been successfully programmed,
there will still be the possible unexpected glitch that
may happen. It would be difficult for consumers to
trust the self driving cars

allow for safe, reliable autonomous
ridesharing without the need for a
Mission Specialist. Without
depending on expertise drivers
• Volvo Cars believes autonomous
drive can generate significant
potential road safety benefits for
society as a whole when all cars
are autonomous.
• "Over one million people die in
car accidents every year. These
are tragedies that self-driving
technology can help solve, but we
can't do this alone," Uber chief
executive Travis Kalanick said in
a statement.
• Considering the increasing
accidents, the involvement of self
driving cars will ensure safety
credibility and decrease the
number of accidents continuously.
Benefits :
• Traffic efficiency- cars would be able
to travel efficiently at optimized
distances from each other. They’d also
determine the best route for you to
take, as to eliminate bumper-to-
bumper traffic jams. 
• Accessibility to transportation - Senior
citizens and disabled personnel are
having difficulty driving. Autonomous
vehicles assist them towards safe and
accessible transportation.
Disadvantages of this Joint
venture :
•  Non-functional sensors - Sensor's
• Fewer job opportunities for others -
As the artificial intelligence continues
to overcome the roles and
responsibilities of humans, taxi, trucks,
or even co-pilots may be laid off as
their services will no longer be
needed. This may significantly impact
the employment rate and economic
growth of a certain country.
failures often happened during drastic
weather conditions. This may not work
during a blizzard or a heavy snowfall.
Our technology continues to develop
and to be tested. Autonomous cars may
provide a significant comfort we
needed. However, we need to bear in
mind that there are still disadvantages
affiliated with it.
