BE AN INFLUENCER

FOR GOD

SUNDAY MEN D-GROUP 5-6pm

INFLUENCER
What is an influencer?
A person who has the power to affect the decisions of others because of his or
her authority, knowledge, position, or relationship within the scope of his control
or authority.

Who is the person who influenced the major decisions in

your life? How?
MATTHEW 5:13-14

Salt and Light

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made
13

salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled
underfoot.
14
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither
do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and
it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before
others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
SALT
 In Jesus’ day, salt was a valued commodity. It has several uses but
mainly for preservation and flavoring.

 As Christians, we are called to directly influence our inner circle by

letting them experience the joy, peace, faith, and the power of the Holy
Spirit in our lives. (preservation)

 We are to reflect God’s love, grace, truth and humility in our lives which
will make people thirsty for the Lord (Colossians 4:6). (flavoring)
How does salt become useless?
 WHEN IMPURITIES ARE MIXED INTO THE EQUATION
Where or how do we spend most of our time? Who are the people we
associate with? Who is really influencing us?

 What happens when salt becomes useless?

We will lose our ability to influence people towards Christ. “Its not the ship
in the water but water in the ship that sinks it. So its not the Christian in the world
but the world in the Christian that constitutes the danger”
LIGHT
 JOHN 8:12
12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever
follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

 As Christians, being light of the world means that we are not only light-receivers, but also
light-givers. We must have a greater concern than only ourselves, and we cannot live only
to ourselves; we must have someone to shine to, and do so lovingly.

 To follow Jesus is to prayerfully ask “What would Jesus do or say in this situation?” Then as
we obey Jesus, He will be the light of our life, enabling us to see.
How does light become useless?
 WHEN IT IS HIDDEN UNDER A BASKET
When people look us, do they see light and hope? Do we glorify God or
ourselves in our actions and success? Just as the light should be in the lampstand,
are we intentional in letting others see God’s light in our lives?

 What happens when our light becomes useless?

We impliedly condone darkness and allow the world to remain in it. “The
Bible is not light of the world, it is the light of the Church. But the world does not
read the Bible, the world read the Christians.”
HOW DO WE INFLUENCE OTHER
FOR CHRIST
 PRAY
 RELY ON THE HOLY SPIRIT
 ENTER INTO THEIR WORLD
 MODEL AUTHENTIC CHRISTLIKENESS
 CONTINUE TO JOURNEY WITH THEM
 DON’T RUSH
SUMMARY
 1 Peter 2:9
9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special
possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness
into his wonderful light.

 Since we are called to be salt and light of this world, God entrusted us
treasures, talents, time, and His truth for us to apply these in our certain level
of influence. God has placed us exactly where He wants us to be in this point of
history of our world.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. Self-Check. Do you recognize your spheres of influence?
Who are the people in your inner, intermediate, and outer
circles?
2. Setting It Right How are you influencing them? Are you
pointing them towards Christ or the world?
3. Living It Out What do you need to do differently as a result
of this Sunday’s message? How will you apply it in your life
this week?
