SIRONA.COM Milling of Zirconium Oxide and Polymers
MILLING – TERMINOLOGY
We are going against 28+ years of CEREC history
Wikitionary definitions:
To grind:
1. To reduce to smaller pieces by crushing with a lateral motion.
2. To shape with the force of friction.
3. (metalworking) To remove material by rubbing with an abrasive surface.
To mill:
1. To grind or otherwise process in a mill or other machine.
2. To shape, polish, dress or finish using a machine.
3. To engrave one or more grooves or a pattern around the edge of a
cylindrical object such as a coin.
MILLING – BENEFITS
Much smoother margins, less chipping
Smaller sprues
Improved processing of polymers
SIRONA.COM Milling of Zirconium Oxide and Polymers
MILLING – LIMITATIONS
inCoris ZI meso and sintered metals (inCoris CC / Crypton)
will still be grinded
maybe in a future SW version
Number of connectors by some bridge restorations
maybe some can milled away in future SW version
For bridges it is not possible to change the connector’s
proposed position(s)
probably will come in a future SW version
Not possible to tip the buccal-lingual axis in block
(only affects Vita CAD-Temp multiColor)
maybe in a future SW version
SIRONA.COM Milling of Zirconium Oxide and Polymers
MILLING – LIMITATIONS
A partially used block cannot be reloaded to use the
remaining material when the initial restoration was
milled in the CEREC or inLab SW
If needed the user can always purchase the inLab/inLab
Stack SW
SIRONA.COM Milling of Zirconium Oxide and Polymers
MILLING – HARDWARE
New spindle motors have been introduced needed for
left side Shaper 25 RZ
Affects both single (closed) and Design 2011 motors
Also applies to
Spindle motor spare parts
Milling Unit spare and repair exchange parts (left side motor)
B-stock units (left side motor)
Milling starter sets will be introduced and include a
replacement spindle motor at an attractive price
SIRONA.COM Milling of Zirconium Oxide and Polymers
MILLING – HARDWARE
The new motors will all have a “Design 2013”
sticker for easy identification – at least for the
“cabrio” units – even when installed
Especially important for replaced motors

MILLING – HARDWARE
Starting serial numbers of units with new spindle motors which
are Sirona approved for milling:
10. July 2013
inLab MC XL 129001
CEREC MC XL Premium Package 302001
Spare parts for “Design 2011” motors
19. August 2013
CEREC MC XL 129001
CEREC MC 202001
CEREC MC X 231001
Spare parts for “closed” motors
SIRONA.COM Milling of Zirconium Oxide and Polymers
MILLING – HARDWARE
Not possible with CEREC 3 milling units
MC XL milling units with manual block fixation only
The new sieve introduced at the time of model milling
must be used, not the metal plate provided with earlier
MC XL milling units
Shaper 25 RZ requires a higher torque resulting in a new
“Torque Wrench HT (high torque)” which can only be
used with this milling instrument
Utilizes a square shaped opening instead of triangle used for
all other instruments
SIRONA.COM Milling of Zirconium Oxide and Polymers
MILLING – INSTRUMENTS
Shaper 25 RZ (left side) may only be fitted with the new Torque Wrench
HT which has a higher torque (turning moment)
Finisher 10 (right side) is the same instrument used for model milling
and uses existing Torque Wrench
Important: only inserted in Bur Set 1 by four-motor milling units
Recommendation: first install the Shaper 25 RZ then the Finisher 10
Recommendation: use one milling instruments set for zirconium oxide
and a second for polymers for the best results
Radiuses of points on the restoration’s occlusal surface
Finisher 10: 0.5mm
Cylinder Pointed Bur 12 S: 0.6mm
Cylinder Pointed Bur 20: 0.4mm
SIRONA.COM Milling of Zirconium Oxide and Polymers
MILLING – INSTRUMENTS
The SW will prompt the user to change the
milling instruments
Shaper 25 RZ: 30 units or 27.000 seconds
Finisher 10: 75 units or 60.000 seconds
the units counter will always be considered
first with the Finisher 10
The user can ignore this prompt (not
recommended!) and use the instruments
longer with a possible negative effect on
the quality of the restoration
Unit counter works the same way as for the
grinding instrumnets

MILLING – SOFTWARE
The user must first activate the “Milling” option in the software:
Configuration Setting Milling Activate
MILLING – SOFTWARE
Upon activation of the Milling option, the user receives the following information:

MILLING – SOFTWARE
Either Grinding or Milling (if available) is selected in the ADMINISTRATION phase

To mill existing restorations loaded
from SW 4.0
Must change option from “Grinding” to
“Milling” in ADMINISTRATION Phase
Then recalculate restoration to factor in

Single pin or multiple pins (Nesting)
Sobald die Restauration in dem ausgewählten Block mittels
Nesting angebracht werden kann, wird dies so umgesetzt
Ansonsten wird die Restauration in der Einfachanstiftung
angebracht
Dies reduziert das notwendige Blockvolumen, verlängert
aber die Bearbeitungszeiten (im Vergleich zum Nesting)

INLAB STACK SW
Positioning in Maxi Size 85/40
Elements may only be positioned on
the grey band so that the prep margin
juts out of this area on one side
It is not possible to position an element
so that its prep margin extends over
both sides of the grey band
Element is then shown in red and will be
automatically positioned outside of this area
In these cases the special “prep-line
process” cannot be used
