Shaper Machine
The Shaper Machine Is A Reciprocating Type Of Machine Basically
Used For Producing The Horizontal, Vertical Or Flat Surfaces. The
Shaper Holds The Single Point Cutting Tool In Ram And Workpiece Is
Fixed In The Table.

Shaper Machine Is A Production Machine In Which The Single Point

Cutting Tools Are Attached And The Workpiece Is Fixed And While
Moving Forward The Tool Cuts The Workpiece And In Return, There Is
No Cut On The Workpiece And Used For Producing Flat And Angular
Surfaces.

Shaper Machine consists of following parts :

i. Base
ii. Column
iii. Table
iv. Cross rail
v. Ram
vi. Clapper Box
vii. Elevating Screw
Shaper Machine Working:

As You Can See The Above Diagram Of Shaper Machine, The Tool Is Hold
By Ram And Workpiece Is Fixed Over Table.
When We Switch On The Power The Ram Reciprocates With Respect To
The Table That Means The Cutting Tool Cuts Workpiece Material In The
Forward Direction And When Moving Return There Is No Cut.
The Cutting Process Take Place At Low Speed Of Ram And Return Stroke
Take Place At High Speed.
With The Use Of Hand Transverse Wheel We Can Do Up And Down Of The
Table.

Shaper Machine Operation:

Generally, There Are Four Types Of Operation Performed On Shaper That

Are:
i. Vertical Cutting Operation
ii. Horizontal Cutting Operation
iii. Inclined Cutting
iv. Angular Or Irregular Cutting Operation
Shaper Machine Types:
There are nine different types of Shaper Machine:
i. Standard Shaper
ii. Vertical Shaper
iii. Horizontal Shaper
iv. Geared Shaper
v. Universal Shaper
vi. Crank Shaper
vii. Draw cut Shaper
viii. Hydraulic Shaper and
ix. Contour Shaper Machine

Shaper Machine Specification:

The following specification of shaper is:
Weight of the Machine.
Floor space required.
Maximum stroke of Ram
Drive types (Hydraulic, Gear and Crank type)
Input Power
Cutting to Return Stroke ratio
Angular Movement of the table and
Feed
Advantages of Shaper Machine:

•The tool (Single Point cutting tool) cost is low.

•The workpiece can be held easily in this machine.
•It produces flat or angular surfaces.
•Setup of Shaper is very easy and tool changing is also easy.

Disadvantages of Shaper Machine:

•The cutting speed is not much high.

•Only one cutting tool can be fixed. There is no option for more than one
cutting tool.

Application of Shaper Machine:

•A shaper Machine is used to make Internal splines.

•It generates straight and flat surfaces either horizontal, vertical or angular
planes.
•It also makes gear teeth.
•Make keyways in pulleys or gears.
•It also Producing contour of concave/convex or a combination of these.
Maintenance Can be of Two Types :

• Preventive maintenance
• Breakdown maintenance

Let’s Discuss About the Maintenance

As Everyone Knows That “Prevention is Better than cure”

The Below Checks Are Recommended For Equipment Prior To Or

During A Unit Of Work Where The Equipment Will Undergo Moderate
To Heavy Use.

Visual Check Of Mains Electrical Switches, Wiring And/Or Conduit

(Cracks, Broken Controls Etc.) Arrange For Immediate Repair Of Any
Faults.
Verify All Guards Are Secure And Function Correctly (Check Latches,
Locks, Fasteners And/Or Interlocks).
Ensure Workspaces And Walkways Are Clear And Unobstructed And
That No Slip-hazards Are Present.
Confirm Availability And Condition Of Personal Protective Equipment.
Conduct Close Inspection For Damage To Switch Gear. Test Operation
Of Switch Gear (Proper Function Of Switch Controls).
Lubricate Lightly According To Manufacturer’s Specification.
Lubricate Ways And Slides According To Manufacturer’s Specification.
Check The Availability Of Spare Parts E.G. Belts Cutting Tools Etc.
Lubricate All Points In Accordance With The Manufacturer's Specification.
Test Work Holding Vice For Proper Operation.
Check Floor Space For Oil Contamination.
Adjust Gibstrips On All Slides According To Manufacturer’s Specification.
Clear Away Accumulated Swarf And Waste From Inside And Around
Housings, Cabinets, Etc.
Examine Drive Belts For Flaws And Correct Tension. Adjust If
Necessary.
Check Pulleys For Correct Alignment. Adjust If Necessary.
Check Security Of All Fixed Guards.
Examine Bolts Used For Mounting The Motor To The Machine. Re-
tighten If Necessary.
Check The Security Of Machine Mountings To The Floor Or Base Block.
