Hello

GOOD MORNING
Grade 10
Activating prior knowledge!

Union Intersection Null set

Or empty set
At the end of the lesson, the students are
expected to:

 Illustrate union and intersection of

events.
 Use the Venn diagram to
differentiate the concept of union
and intersection of events.
 Appreciate union and intersection
of events as part of our daily lives.
Union and Intersection
of events
UNION of events
A set that contains all the elements that are in at least one
of the two events.
The union of events A and B, written AUB ( which
means A or B)
Example 1
Example 2
A= { 1, 2, 3 } B= { 2, 4, 6 }
A={ 1, 3, 5, 7 }
B={ 1, 2, 3, 4 }
AUB= { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 }

AUB= { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 }
INTERSECTION of events
A set that contains all the elements that are in both
events.
The intersection of events A and B, written AB ( which
means A and B)
Example Example 2
A= { 1, 2, 3 } B= { 2, 4, 6 }
A= { 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 }
B= { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 }
A B= {2}
A ∩ B= { 1, 3, 5 }
UNION and INTERSECTION of events using
Ve n n D i a g r a m

Given:
A= { 1, 3, 6, 9, 12 }

B= { 6, 8, 10, 12 }

ACTIVITY 1
A= { 1, 3, 5, 7 } C= { 2, 4, 6, 8 }

B= { 2, 3, 5, 7 } D= { 2, 3, 4, 5 }
Find:
1. A∩B = { 3, 5, 7 }
2. AUB = { 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 }
3. A∩C ={ }
4. C∩D = { 2, 4 }
5. AUBUD = { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 }
ASSIGNMENT
A= {a, b, c, d}, C= {b, d, f, g}

B= {c, d, e, f} D={ a, c, e, f, g }
