CMOS Logic Families

CMOS Logic Families:

•The first commercially successful CMOS family was 4000-

series CMOS.

•4000-series circuits offered the benefit of low power

dissipation

•Not compatible to bipolar TTL.

CMOS Logic Families
CMOS Logic Families:

•In order to avoid these problems the following CMOS logic

families were introduced.

• HC (High-speed CMOS)
• HCT (High-speed CMOS, TTL compatible)
• VHC (Very High-speed CMOS)
• VHCT (Very High speed CMOS, TTL compatible)
• FCT (Fast CMOS, TTL compatible)
• FCT-T (Fast CMOS, TTL compatible with TTL VOH)

2
CMOS Logic Families
HC (High-speed CMOS):

•The first two 74-series CMOS families are HC (High-speed

CMOS) and HCT (High-speed CMOS, TTL compatible).

•Compared with the original 4000 family,

HC and HCT both have higher speed and
better current sinking and sourcing
capability.

•The HC Logic family can use any power supply voltage

between 2 and 6 V.

3
CMOS Logic Families
HC (High-speed CMOS):

•A higher voltage is used for higher speed, and

a lower voltage for lower power dissipation.

•HC devices operated with 5V are not quite compatible with

TTL.

•The input and output Levels of HC devices with 5V is shown

in fig. 4
CMOS Logic Families
HC (High-speed CMOS):

•The output levels produced by TTL devices does not match

with i/p and o/p levels of HC logic family. Since the range of
undefined level is higher.

5
CMOS Logic Families
HCT (High-speed CMOS, TTL compatible):
•HCT logic family have higher speed of operation than HC
logic family.

•In HCT logic family the range of undefined level is smaller i.e,
from 0.8V to2V.

•Input and output levels for HCT devices using a 5-V supply
6
CMOS Logic Families
HCT (High-speed CMOS, TTL compatible):
•Here VOHmin and VOLmax are same as that of HC logic family.

•But difference between VIHmin and VILmax is reduced.

7
CMOS Logic Families
HCT (High-speed CMOS, TTL compatible):

•Transfer characteristics of HC and HCT circuits under typical

conditions.

8
CMOS Logic Families
VHC (Very High-speed CMOS):
•The VHC family is introduced after HC and HCT families.

•The VHC family fastest in speed (twice as fast as HC/HCT)

•The VHC family can recognise low i/p voltage,

but o/p characteristics are same as HC/HCT.

•VHC/VHCT outputs have symmetric output drive.

•That is, an output can sink or source equal amounts of

current in both states.

9
CMOS Logic Families
VHCT (Very High speed CMOS, TTL compatible):
•This family is advanced version of HCT family.

•The VHCT family fastest in speed operation than HC, HCT

and VHC logic families.

•The VHCT family can recognise low i/p voltage,

hence, it is TTL compatible.

•VHC/VHCT outputs have symmetric output drive.

•That is, an output can sink or source equal amounts of

current in both states.

10
CMOS Logic Families
FCT (Fast CMOS, TTL compatible):
•The key benefit of the FCT family was its capability of the
best TTL families while reducing power consumption and
maintaining full compatibility with TTL.

•The speed of FC-T Logic family is faster than other logic

family.

Drawbacks:
•creating enormous CV2f power dissipation(Dynamic power
dissipation)

•circuit noise as its outputs swing from 0 V to almost 5 V in

high-speed

11
CMOS Logic Families
FCT-T (Fast CMOS, TTL compatible with TTL VOH):
•The speed is similar to FCT Logic family

•To overcome power dissipation in FCT, FCT-T logic family is

introduced with same voltage level.

•Low power consumption than FCT

•Switching noise is reduced
