DEFINITIONS OF AUTISM,

ADHD, MULTIPLE
DISABILITIES AND
DEAF-BLINDNESS
(IDEA,NTA)
(IDEA- Individuals with Disabilities
Education Act,1990)
(NTA- The National Trust for the
Welfare of Persons with Autism,
Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation
and Multiple Disabilities Act, 1999)
AUTISM
IDEA :
AUTISM refers to “a developmental
disability significantly affecting verbal
and nonverbal communication and
social interaction, generally evident
before age three, that adversely affects
a child’s educational performance.” 
 
NTA :

“AUTISM" means a condition of


uneven skill development primarily
affecting the communication and
social abilities of a person, marked by
repetitive and ritualistic behavior.
MULTIPLE
DISABILITIES
IDEA :
multiple disabilities refers to
“concomitant [simultaneous]
impairments (such as intellectual
disability-blindness, intellectual
disability-orthopedic impairment, etc.),
the combination of which causes such
severe educational needs that they
cannot be accommodated in a special
education program solely for one of the
impairments. The term does not include
deaf-blindness.”
NTA :

“Multiple disabilities” means a


combination of two or more disabilities
as defined in clause (i) of section 2 of the
Persons with Disabilities (Equal
Opportunities, Protection of Rights and
Full Participation) Act, 1995.

 
DEAF-
BLINDNESS
IDEA :
 “concomitant [simultaneous] hearing
and visual impairments, the
combination of which causes such
severe communication and other
developmental and educational needs
that they cannot be accommodated in
special education programs solely for
children with deafness or children with
blindness.”
 NATIONAL DEAF-BLIND
CHILD COUNT (NCBD) :

“children and youth having auditory and visual


impairments, the combination of which creates
such severe communication and other
developmental and learning needs that they
cannot be appropriately educated without special
education and related services, beyond those that
would be provided solely for children with
hearing impairments, visual impairments, or
severe disabilities to address their educational
needs due to these concurrent disabilities."

“Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or
Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder
(ADHD) is a complex syndrome of
impairments in developmental unfolding
of the unconscious self-management
system of the brain that affects significant
numbers of children, adolescents, and
adults, and often can be treated effectively
with appropriate medication. “
“Attention- Deficit /Hyperactivity
Disorder (ADHD) is a neurobehavioral
condition characterized by excessive
restlessness, inattention, distraction, and
impulsivity.”
